Volleyball Falls To Wofford, Gardner-Webb

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – The Savannah State volleyball team dropped back-to-back matches on Sunday against Wofford College and Gardner-Webb University in Boiling Springs, North Carolina.

SSU opened the day against Wofford. In the opening set, SSU fell behind quickly as Wofford jumped out to a 10-4 lead. The Lady Tigers opened a 5-0 run out of a timeout, but the offensive spurt was short lived as Wofford quickly regain the momentum.

The Terriers went up 21-15 down the stretch, as the Lady Tigers struggled with several costly errors. Wofford sealed up a 1-0 lead with a 25-18 win. In the second set, Wofford held the momentum with a 25-16 win, taking a 2-0 lead.

Savannah State bounced back in the third set, keeping pace with the Terriers through the opening moments. Zariya Thomas recorded six service points on a run that lifted SSU to a 13-9 lead.

Later in the set, the Lady Tigers extended their lead to 20-16 on a kill from Gabrielle Nathaniel. But, Wofford fired back with a 5-1 run that cut the Lady Tigers' lead to 22-21.

Justice Dilworth recorded a kill to knot the match up at 24 all. After a Wofford error, and a kill, the game was tied at 25 all. The Terriers garnered their sixth win of the season finishing the close set with a 25-27 win.

Dilworth led the Lady Tigers with eight kills. Alexis Washington led in digs with 11. Thomas and Elexius Harris each had five kills in the match. Taylor Baird and Alyse High led Wofford with nine kills apiece.

The Lady Tigers struggled in the second match of the day against Gardner-Webb University.

Gardner-Webb opened the match with a 6-0 run in the first set, prompting SSU to take a timeout. The Lady Tigers managed to cut the home team's lead to 9-6 behind kills from Nathaniel and Thomas out of the timeout.

Gardner-Webb took a 1-0 lead on a 25-13 set win. They carried the momentum over with a 25-9 win in the second set, and a 25-11 win in the third and final set.
Dilworth led the Lady Tigers with nine kills. Washington led in digs with 11. Tyra Montour led Gardner-Webb with nine kills.

The Lady Tigers will play Charleston Southern on September 23, before opening the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference portion of their schedule with a visit to Florida A&M in Tallahassee on September 26th.
