Volleyball Falls In ISTAP Collegiate Cup

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Savannah State volleyball dropped their final two matches of the 2014 ISTAP Collegiate Cup 2, hosted by Alabama State, on Friday.
 
SSU fell to Southeast Missouri and Towson in the first meeting of the programs in SSU's Division I history (since 2002). The Lady Tigers dropped the day's first match 0-3 to Southeast Missouri, and despite a strong opening set, fell to Towson in the final game of the tournament 0-3.
 
In the opening game against Southeast Missouri State the Lady Tigers struggled out of the gate falling 9-25 in the first set.
 
Into the second set, SSU took an 11-9 lead behind two Redhawk errors. Zariya Thomas registered a kill to lift the Lady Tigers to a 12-10 lead, but Southeast Missouri fired back down the stretch taking a 20-17 lead.
 
Behind two service points from Krissa Gearring the Redhawks took a 22-17 lead, prompting SSU to take a timeout. Out of the pause, SSU kept in the fight, but a service ace from Gearring sealed up a 25-21 win for the Redhawks.
 
Southeast Missouri State carried the momentum into the final set, beating SSU 25-7 for their fourth win of the season.
 
Justice Dilworth led the Lady Tigers with six kills and seven digs in the match. Andrea Baylin led the Redhawks with nine kills. Katarina Rotta led in digs with 13.
 
In SSU's final match of the tournament, the Lady Tigers were behind 16-20 in the opening set, but behind five service points from Gabrielle Nathaniel knotted the match up at 21.

 
A service ace from Towson's Aimee Shubert, and an SSU error sealed up a 1-0 lead for the Tigers with a 25-22 set win.
 
Towson made quick work of the final two sets, beating SSU 25-11, and 25-9 to seal up their eighth straight victory of the season.
 
Nathaniel led the Lady Tigers with five kills. Dilworth led in digs with seven. Taylor Heuwe led Towson with 10 kills.
 
The Lady Tigers fall to 2-7 on the year. They return to Savannah for two home matches against Alabama A&M on September 18, and against Tougaloo College on September 19.
