Box Score PROVO, Utah - The Savannah State football team closed out their 2014 season with a 64-0 road loss to Brigham Young.

The announced crowd of 52,123 at Edwards Stadium saw the Cougars score on their first three series.

BYU took the opening kickoff and drove 85 yards in four plays as Christian Stewart threw a 71 yard touchdown pass to Mitch Matthews.

Brigham Young led 21-0 after the first quarter and went into the half with a commanding 51-0 advantage.

The Tigers had a hard time getting their offense in gear in the first half, in the 41 degree temperature. SSU had 39 offensive yards after the first quarter and could only advance as far as their own 49.

BYU fumbled on their first possession of the third quarter and Savannah State linebacker
Marcus Lee scooped it up and rambled 35 yards for an apparent touchdown but referees ruled that Lee's knee touched the ground as he picked up the ball.

The Tigers drove to the BYU 30 but turned the ball over on downs. That would be their deepest penetration into Cougar territory all day.

Neither team scored in the third quarter and the Cougars added a pair of field goals and a touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Savannah State (0-12) ended the day with 63 offense yards.

Reserve freshman quarterback
Michael Knox ran for 14 yards on three carries while sophomore running back Richard Williams added 12 yards on six carries.
Leon Prunty completed 10 of 25 passes for 40 yards. Jeremiah Harris was the top receiver with four receptions for 17 yards.

Leonardo Myers paced the SSU defense with a career-high 11 tackles.

John Barron averaged 44.6 yards a punt and had a career-long 66 yard punt on the Tigers first series.

Brigham Young (7-4), who had 487 yards of offense, was led by Stewart who passed for 196 yards and four touchdowns. Stewart also ran for two touchdowns. Nate Carter ran for 116 yards and a touchdown while Matthews ended the afternoon with four catches for 110 yards and two touchdowns.Kavika Fonua and Zac Stout each had five tackles for the defense.

Despite the lopsided loss, SSU head coach
Earnest Wilson III was happy to have had the chance to take the team cross county to play such a storied program.

"I want to show them a little bit of Salt Lake City...Show them another part of the world. This is what football is. It's an extension of one's education and when your program is growing you want to expose young men, especially guys from South Georgia and small towns or South Carolina. They're taking pictures of the mountains and learning about the Mormon mission," said Wilson.
