Volleyball Falls To The Citadel

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Savannah State Lady Tigers dropped a nonconference road match to The Citadel on Tuesday, despite the return of one of their leaders.
 
It was the second of three matches with the Lady Bulldogs this season. Earlier this season, SSU lost 1-3 to the Lady Bulldogs, but on Tuesday they fell in straight sets, 0-3.
 
SSU junior Justice Dilworth returned after missing four games due to injury. Dilworth and freshman Zariya Thomas led the Lady Tigers with six kills apiece. Alexis Washington led the Lady Tigers in digs with a season-high 17.
 
The Citadel jumped out to an early lead in the opening set, going up 12-5 to open. SSU struggled midway through as the Lady Bulldogs pushed out to a 19-8 lead. The Lady Tigers held on with a kill and service ace from Elexius Harris.
 
A kill from Dilworth and a service ace from Lynae Bryant cut The Citadel's lead to 20-11. In the final moments, SSU made the Lady Bulldogs earn the win on kills, as they only committed one error in the final 10 points. The Lady Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead behind a 25-16 set victory.
 
The Lady Bulldogs pushed out to a 10-2 lead in the opening portion of the second set. SSU struggled as The Citadel kept pilling on points.
 
Trailing 10-18, the Lady Tigers got a spark on a service ace and kill from Olivia Wasdin. Harris added a kill later to cut the home team's lead to 19-13.
 
The Citadel responded with two kills, pushing out to a 22-13 lead. SSU fought to the end, but fell 18-25 as the home team went up 2-0 into the third set.
 
In the final set, SSU managed only 14 points as The Citadel sealed up their sixth win of the season. The Lady Tigers fall to 4-16 overall.
 
Savannah State returns home this weekend for two Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) matches. On Friday, SSU faces North Carolina Central at 6 p.m., and on Sunday they host North Carolina A&T State. Both games will be played in Willcox-Wiley and admission is free.
