Box Score

SAVANNAH, Ga. – It was Senior Night on Wednesday in Willcox-Wiley Gym, as the Lady Tigers played host to Mercer University for their final home game of the 2014 season.

Chantia Taylor and Olivia Wasdin were honored in pre-game ceremonies for their contributions to the Savannah State Volleyball program.

The Lady Tigers played a tough match, but fell to the Lady Bears in straight sets, 17-25, 17-25 and 18-25. SSU was led by junior Justice Dilworth who registered eight kills and 10 digs on the night. Caitlynn Masoe followed with five kills, seven digs and one service ace.

Out of the gate, Mercer took a 6-3 lead behind a service ace from Bailey Noon and two kills from Molly Locke. SSU fired back with a kill from Dilworth and on a Mercer error tied the opening set up at 6 all.

Later, Mercer opened a 5-1 run for a 17-12 lead, prompting the Lady Tigers to take a timeout. Out of the pause, the Lady Bears held the momentum taking the majority of the next nine points for a 22-16 lead.

Locke laid down back-to-back kills for the final 25-17 Mercer win. Locke finished the night with 13 kills and nine digs, and a .385 hitting percentage.

Mercer again rolled to an early lead in the second set, breaking a 5 all tie with a 6-1 run for an 11-6 advantage. Out of an SSU timeout, kills from Wasdin and Autumn Session cut the visitors lead to 11-8, prompting Mercer to take a timeout.

SSU begin to claw back into the game, cutting Mercer's lead to 13-11 after the timeout. But, the visitors from Macon again extended their lead with a 4-0 lead behind a kill and three straight service points from Locke.

Down the final stretch of the second set, SSU managed a 3-0 run, but fell short in the final three points as kills from Gretja Otten and Claire Walizcek sealed up the 25-17 win and a 2-0 lead for the Lady Bears.

In the final set, teams came out firing, but a 4-0 run from Mercer, that included a service ace from Walizcek and two kills from Caroline Carlton, lifted the visitors to a 10-5 lead.

Later, SSU was struggling to stay in as Mercer pushed out to a 20-12 lead behind a 4-0 run. Emily Krogman recorded the final two kills for Mercer as they sealed up their eighth win of the season.

SSU falls to 4-24 on the season. They hit the road for the final four games of the 2014 season. On Thursday, they face off with Brewton-Parker in the year's final nonconference game.
