Eagles Defeat Savannah State

Box Score DURHAM, N.C.- North Carolina Central scored a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter and went on to defeat Savannah State 42-14 at O'Kelly-Riddick Stadium.

SSU was led by Richard Williams who scored two touchdowns and Marquis Smith and Alfred Ansley who had 10 tackles apiece.

The Tigers trailed 28-7 in the third quarter before Williams ran for a five-yard touchdown with 37 seconds remaining in the quarter. John Barron's extra point made the score 28-14.

The touchdown was set up by a 54-yard punt return by Ker-Sean Wilson that ended at the NCCU 15 yard line.

North Carolina Central found the end zone twice in the fourth quarter as Andre Clark scored on a two-yard run with 12:19 left in the game and Anas Hasic scored on a six-yard catch from Malcolm Bell with 4:28 remaining.

The Tigers missed a field goal on their first possession of the contest but scored on their second series as Williams scored on a 56-yard touchdown reception from Tino Smith with 2:06 left in the first quarter. Barron's extra point gave SSU a 7-0 lead.

Williams' score was set up by a interception by Romahn Hemingway at the SSU 14.

Two third down plays gave Savannah State new life during the scoring drive.

Smith threw a 24 yard completion to Jeremiah Harris on third and 12 and three plays later after Smith was sacked for a three yard loss on third and 17, the Eagles were flagged 15 yards for sideline interference which gave SSU a first down at the Central 41

Central tied the game at 7-7 on their first possession of the second quarter and went ahead 14-7 with 12 seconds left before the end of the half.

The Eagles put together scoring drives on their first two possessions of the third quarter to increase their lead to 28-7.

Savannah State produced 315 yards of offense with 201 passing and 114 coming on the ground.

Williams had a career-high 87 yards on the ground, Smith threw for 202 yards and Harris caught three passes for 73 yards.

SSU only drew two penalties for 10 yards.

NCCU (4-4, 3-1) had 498 yards of offense and had six sacks on defense.

Bell ran for 72 yards while passing for 287 yards and three touchdowns. Hasic hauled in 10 passes for 174 yards and a touchdown. Jordan Miles added 10 tackles.

SSU (0-8, 0-5) will travel to South Carolina State on November 1 for a 1:30 p.m. contest. The Bulldogs (5-3, 3-1) enter the game coming off a 20-14 win over Bethune-Cookman
