Box Score STATESBORO, Ga. – The Savannah State volleyball squad dropped a nonconference road match to Georgia Southern on Tuesday in straight sets.
The Lady Tigers were led by
Justice Dilworth, who recorded four kills in the loss.
Elexius Harris and
Zariya Thomas each had three kills.
Alexis Washington led in digs with seven.
The Eagles jumped out to a quick lead in the opening set with a 9-4 run. Later, behind a kill from Cathrine Murray, Southern extended their lead to 14-7, prompting the Lady Tigers to take a timeout.
The Lady Tigers struggled out of the timeout, managing only two more points in the set. The Eagles jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the match with a 25-9 win.
Southern carried the momentum over into the second set, going up 7-3 out of the gate. Down the stretch, SSU continued to struggled, as the Eagles improved to 18-8.
Later, the Eagles were looking to seal up the second set win, when behind a 5-0 run they went up 24-11. Dilworth stopped the run with a kill.
Olivia Wasdin registered a kill to keep SSU alive. A service error from the Lady Tigers ended the set, as the Eagles improved to 2-0 with a 25-13 win.
In the third set, Washington recorded a service ace to knot the game up at 3 in the opening minutes. Later, the set was tied up at 5, but the Eagles broke the stalemate with an 8-2 run for a 13-7 lead.
Out of a timeout, Southern improved to 18-8 lead, behind a 5-1 run. The Lady Tigers struggled down the stretch, managing only a handful of points. Kym Coley recorded the final point of the match on a kill, giving the Eagles a 25-12 set win and the 3-0 match victory.
Coley led the Eagles with 15 kills. Murray and Stephens Avery led in digs with 10 apiece. Southern improves to 6-15 overall. The Lady Tigers fall to 4-20 on the season.
The Lady Tigers return home for the final home stand. They open the four-game home stretch with a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) match against Bethune-Cookman on Friday. First serve is set for 6 p.m. in Willcox-Wiley Gym.
