Volleyball Closes Out Stetson Tournament

DELAND, Fla. – Savannah State volleyball closed out the Stetson University Tournament, their second tournament of the season, on Saturday with losses to Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) foe Bethune-Cookman and host Stetson University.

Senior Bryana Gadis and sophomore Bianca Brochu were named to the All-Tournament team.

After the first seven games of the 2013 season, freshman Gabrielle Nathaniel leads the Lady Tigers with 32 kills (.115%) and nine blocks. Freshman Alexis Washington leads the team in digs with 57 (2.71 dig/g). Sophomore Christian Lyle has 12 blocks and 14 kills.

The Lady Tigers are scheduled to travel up the I-95 for a match against Charleston Southern this coming Tuesday.  First serve is set for 7 p.m.

Nonconference

The Lady Tigers got a glimpse of conference play in a 0-3 loss to Bethune-Cookman Saturday morning. The game was scheduled as a nonconference matchup.

SSU came out firing against the Lady Wildcats in the first set, taking a 7-4 lead behind a service ace from Asiha Williams. Kills from Nathaniel, Justice Dilworth and a couple of B-CU errors put SSU up 10-6 moments later.

The Lady Wildcats took their first lead of the set, 11-10, on an SSU error. But, the Lady Tigers tied the set up at 12 later.

After trading points, the Lady Wildcats extended a four point lead behind a 4-1 run, prompting SSU to take a timeout.
B-CU wasted no time out of the pause, ending the first set on a 6-1 run for a 25-16 game win.

The second set played differently for the Lady Tigers as B-CU used the late momentum from first set to jump out to an 8-4 advantage.

The Lady Tigers struggled as B-CU recorded three straight kills, two from Phylecia Armstrong en route to an 18-7 advantage.

Out of an SSU timeout, Washington registered a kill for SSU to cut the Lady Wildcats lead to 18-8. Down the stretch, SSU failed to stop the Lady Wildcats as they took a 2-0 match lead with a 25-14 set win.

Into the third set, B-CU opened with a 3-0 run, but SSU fired back with four straight points capped by a kill from Nathaniel for a 4-3 SSU advantage.

Out of a B-CU timeout, the Lady Wildcats knotted the game up at four. Later, SSU fought back to tie the game again, this time at six.

It was all Lady Wildcats after the final tie of the match was broken with a 6-2 run from B-CU for a 12-7 advantage.

Midway through the last set, SSU continued to fight, but the Lady Wildcat's managed spurts of offense resulting in a 23-11 advantage, late.

Out of an SSU timeout, the Lady Tigers managed two more points, but the Lady Wildcats sealed up their first match win of the season with a 25-13 set win.

Nathaniel led the Lady Tigers with eight kills. Stephens led in digs with 12. Rhea Simon led the Lady Wildcats with 12 kills, while Alexa Thomas and Normarie Rolon led in digs with nine apiece.

Routed By The House

In the closing game of the tournament, SSU was routed by host Stetson, falling in straight sets, 0-3.

The Lady Hatters jumped out to a 15-7 advantage in the first set, prompting SSU to take a timeout. SSU managed several points behind kills from Brochu, Nathaniel and Dilworth down the stretch, but Stetson closed out the first set win with a 25-11 score.

In the second set, SSU took a 5-3 lead behind a kill from Brochu, but Stetson spread the score with a 7-0 run behind seven service points from Kayla Weller.

Leading 12-6, Stetson's Tiffany Creamer served up seven straight points for a 19-6 home team advantage. The Lady Hatters improved to a 2-0 match lead with a 25-9 set win. The nine points were the lowest score in a single set for the Lady Tigers on the season.

Stetson opened the third set with a 7-2 run, that was stopped by a kill from Dilworth. Midway through the set, Stetson jumped out a 16-10 lead with a kill from Cailyn Prewitt.

Down the stretch, SSU put up five more points behind kills from Nathaniel and Brochu, but the Lady Hatters sealed up their fifth win of the season with a 25-15 game win.

Brochu led the Lady Tigers with six kills, five digs and one block. Washington led in digs with eight.

Kaley Melville and Prewitt led Stetson with nine kills apiece. Alexa Drost led a well-balanced defensive effort with seven digs for the Lady Hatters.
