Volleyball Drop Matches To Stetson and Providence

DELAND, Fla. – In the opening day of the Stetson University Tournament, Friday, the Lady Tigers dropped two matches, falling to 0-5 on the season.

SSU fell to Stetson in the opening game of the tournament, 0-3. In Friday's nightcap, Providence dashed by the Lady Tigers in straight sets, 3-0.

The Lady Tigers get a glimpse of Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) action in a nonconference matchup against MEAC perennial power Bethune-Cookman, Saturday morning. They are scheduled to close out the tournament Saturday afternoon with a rematch against Stetson.

Home Court

In the opening set of the first game, sophomore Justice Dilworth laid down a kill to give the Lady Tigers a 4-3 advantage. A kill from Stetson and two costly SSU errors put the home team up 6-4 moments later.

Out of a timeout, Stetson extended their lead with an 8-2 run for a 13-6 advantage. Sophomore Christian Lyle responded with a kill, and then followed it with a service ace to cut the home team's lead to 13-8.

Later in the set, Stetson grabbed four quick points for a 19-11 lead. The Lady Tigers fired back with kills from Lyle and senior Bryana Gadis, but the Lady Hatters sealed up the win with back-to-back kills for a 25-16 set win.

After the hard fought set, the Lady Tigers waned in the second set. The Lady Hatters quickly took a 12-5 lead behind several service aces, and SSU errors.

Out of a timeout, SSU looked to rally, but couldn't gain ground against the home team. SSU stopped the action with a timeout after Stetson took a 20-10 lead.

Stetson took a 2-0 match lead with a 5-2 run out of the timeout for a 25-12 set win.

In the third set, Stetson carried their momentum over, opening with a 12-4 run. Out of a timeout, Kaley Melville served up four straight points for a 16-4 Lady Hatter lead.

After an attack error by Stetson, the Lady Hatters extended their lead to 22-6 behind a 7-0 run.

Two points from the end of the match, SSU stayed in the fight with kills from Bianca Brochu and Gadis.

SSU was unable to muster a rally as Stetson closed out the match win with a 25-11 set win.

Brochu and Gadis led the Lady Tigers with six kills apiece. Senior Asiha Williams led the team in digs with ten.

Melville led the home team with 14 kills and eight digs. Michelle Kastner led the Lady Hatters in digs with 14.

Friars' Roast

In the Lady Tigers second match of the tournament, the Providence Friars quickly jumped out to a 13-3 lead in the opening set.

Out of a timeout, SSU struggled to gain ground as the Friars' Mackenzie Ziegler served up four straight points for a 16-3 lead.

Dilworth answered with a kill on a set from freshman Caitlynn Masoe. After Providence earned their 17th point, Masoe fired back with four straight points on serves, including a service ace, cutting the Friars' lead to 17-8.

The Lady Tigers continued to battle, but the Friars closed out the first game with a 25-11 win, behind two kills.

The Friars carried over their momentum into the second game, jumping out a 17-4 lead early. SSU struggled to get points on the board, falling 25-10.

The third set was similar to the second as Providence sealed up their third match win of the season with a 25-10 set win over SSU.

SSU freshman Gabrielle Nathaniel led the Lady Tigers on offense with four kills. Freshman Alexis Washington led in digs with 17. Masoe recorded two service aces as well for SSU.

Lindsey Watt led the Friars in kills with eight, while Michelle Cruz led in digs with 15.
