SAVANNAH, Ga. - Savannah State University first-year head coach Earnest Wilson III on Wednesday night said he has not decided whether Leon Prunty will start at quarterback or whether he will go with Zach Hutcheson when the Tigers play Troy University on Saturday night.
Â
"We'll probably use both of them," Wilson said.
Â
SSU (0-1) will play Troy (1-0) at 7 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Troy, Ala. The game will be carried online by ESPN3.com and it will be broadcast on WHCJ 90.3 FM.
A member of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference in the Football Championship Subdivision, SSU is regrouping after a 77-9 loss to Georgia Southern last Saturday in Statesboro.
Â
Troy, a member of the Sun Belt Conference in the Football Bowl Subdivision, is brimming after a 34-31 overtime victory against visiting Alabama-Birmingham last Saturday. The Trojans entered the fourth quarter trailing, 31-17, but Will Scott kicked a 30-yard field goal to win the game.
Â
Saturday's game will be the first meeting between SSU and Troy.
Â
Against Georgia Southern, Prunty started at quarterback in his first collegiate game. The 6-foot-4, 220-pound redshirt freshman was 5-of-18 passing for 34 yards. He was intercepted one time.
Â
Wilson replaced Prunty with Hutcheson, a 6-foot-4, 208-pound sophomore transfer who finished 11-of-26 passing for 128 yards, including a 5-yard touchdown pass to tight end Kris Drummond. Hutcheson was intercepted twice.
Â
"Both he and Zach did OK," Wilson said of Prunty. "But it's not winning football. It's not the kind of leadership I'm looking for. These guys have so much potential, like everybody on our team, and they've got to work up to and live up to their potential. I don't think the fans have seen what I've seen with these young men. I think we're going to be winners. I think we're going to be real winners."
Â
Senior Antonio Bostick, SSU's starting quarterback last season, was suspended by the NCAA for at least the first two games. Wilson last week said Bostick was suspended "for academic reasons" and his return "depends on the NCAA."
Â
SSU'S RUNNING GAME STRUGGLES
Georgia Southern ran for 576 yards and 10 touchdowns on 68 carries against SSU, while the Tigers ran for 21 yards on 19 carries.
Â
"We had a freshman (Chidi Onwuzuruoha) starting at center. We had a freshman (Afolabi Ayangbayi) starting at right tackle," Wilson said. "They're going to be alright. Everybody didn't see everything that we saw, but they pancaked some of Georgia Southern's starters, and they're no joke."
Â
When asked what he learned about his team against GSU, Wilson said, "I just learned that we've got a long way to go. But I already knew that. Our main thing is that we have great young men, and I just think that they need to improve and understand football scenarios."
Â
SSU'S LINEBACKERS IMPRESS WILSON
Wilson said he was encouraged by the performances of SSU linebackers Marquis Smith, Trevion Ashford and Justin Dixon. He said he was particularly pleased with strongside linebacker Smith, a 6-foot-3, 235-pound freshman who made a team-high 13 tackles.
Weakside linebacker Ashford, a 6-foot, 190-pound sophomore, made 11 tackles. Middle linebacker Dixon, a 5-foot-11, 225-pound sophomore, made 10 tackles.
Â
"The linebackers are young. They're freshmen and sophomores," Wilson said. "They kicked some butt. Â We were fighting right to the very end of the game."
Â
SSU defensive end David Adebiyi, a 6-foot-5, 260-pound junior, suffered a high ankle sprain against GSU and "he will not be able to play" against Troy, Wilson said.
Â
TROY OUTLOOK
Troy quarterback Corey Robinson, a 6-foot-1, 205-pound senior from Paducah, Ky., set an NCAA record (minimum 30 completions) with his 30-of-32 passing performance (93.8 percent) against UAB. He broke Steve Sarkisian's record of 91.2 percent set in 1995.
Â
Robinson, a four-year starter nicknamed the "Bazooka from Paducah," threw for 319 yards, including a 23-yard touchdown pass. He entered this season as the FBS' returning leader in career passing yardage with 10,258 yards and 61 touchdowns.
Â
"We know they run an 'Air Raid' (offense)," Wilson said. "They're pretty good at it."
Â
Last season, Troy gained 572 yards of total offense in a 30-24 loss to visiting Mississippi State. The Trojans generated 721 yards of total offense in a 55-48 loss at Tennessee.
Â
Troy head coach Larry Blakeney is in his 23rd season at the helm and he is the Trojans' all-time winningest coach with a 170-98-1 record. The field at Veterans Memorial Stadium is named in his honor.
Â
DID YOU KNOW?
Troy has played five games against a MEAC opponent and all five have been against Florida A&M. The Trojans are 3-2 against the Rattlers.
Â
This will be Troy's first game against an FCS opponent since 2008, when the Trojans beat Western Kentucky, 17-7. Only six FBS teams have gone longer without playing an FCS opponent: Florida International, Notre Dame, Rice, Texas, UCLA and Southern California.
