Volleyball Opens Conference Schedule

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Savannah State volleyball squad opened up their Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) schedule Friday night in Willcox-Wiley Gym against perennial conference power Florida A&M.

The Lady Tigers fell in three sets to the visitors from Tallahassee.  SSU put up the most combined points (50) against the Lady Rattlers since their first season in the MEAC (2010).

Florida A&M, who was picked in a preseason poll to win the MEAC Southern Division, improved to 4-6 with the win and 1-0 in the conference. SSU falls to 0-17 overall and 0-1 in the conference.

The Lady Tigers were led by senior Bryana Gadis, who recorded six kills and five digs. Senior Asiha Williams led in hitting percentage (.222), recording four kills on nine attempts.

Williams and freshman Alexis Washington led in digs with six. Washington returned from injury with the team's MEAC debut. Justice Dilworth and Bianca Brochu added four kills apiece.

The Lady Rattlers were led by Ginna Lopez-Chavez. She recorded 11 kills on 17 attempts (.529). Katherine Huanec recorded 10 kills and 10 digs as well for FAMU.

In the opening set, the Lady Rattlers took a 5-2 lead behind three service points from Diana Gonzales. A kill from Dilworth cut the visitors lead to one point, 6-5 moments later.

SSU freshman Caitlynn Masoe recorded a kill on a set from Dilworth to knot the game up at nine. Florida A&M broke away with four back-to-back kills for a 14-10 lead.

Down the stretch SSU put up five more points as the Lady Rattlers claimed a 1-0 lead with a 25-15 game win.

In the second set, FAMU came out firing with back-to-back service aces from Joanie Del Castillo. But, SSU fought back. Sophomore Christian Lyle registered a timely block, forcing an FAMU error to knot the score up at four.

FAMU pushed out to a 12-8 lead behind several SSU errors. Gadis recorded a kill on a set from Masoe to cut the Lady Rattlers lead to 12-9.

The Lady Rattlers extended their lead to 16-9 behind four straight kills. Trailing 13-19, SSU stayed in the game with a kill from Masoe and a service ace from Williams, cutting FAMU's lead to 20-15.

Late in the set, Lyle recorded a kill to cut the visitors lead to 18-22, but FAMU fired back with two kills and an ace for a 25-18 game win and the 2-0 match lead. The 18 points scored was the most an SSU team has put up against FAMU in a single set since joining the MEAC in 2010.

Early in the final game, FAMU took a 10-5 lead behind several Lady Tiger errors. Later, Lyle recorded a kill to cut the Lady Rattlers lead to 14-10.

Behind a 4-0 run, FAMU took a 20-13 lead. Williams stopped the run with a kill on a set from Brochu.

Williams recorded a service ace, moments later, to keep SSU in the fight. With match point showing for the Lady Rattlers, Gadis recorded a kill for SSU's 17th point. A service error from SSU ended the game as FAMU picked up their first MEAC win behind a 25-17 game win.

The Lady Tigers continue their MEAC schedule with a visit from Bethune-Cookman. First serve in Willcox-Wiley on Sunday, September 29 is set for 1 p.m.
