Tigers Fall To No. 16 Miami

Box Score
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla.- Gus Williams ran for 113 yards and scored three touchdowns to lead Miami to a 77-7 win over Savannah State in a game played at Sun Life Stadium.
The crowd of 42, 571 saw the 16th ranked Hurricanes scored 21 points in the first quarter and add 28 more in the second quarter for a 49-0 halftime advantage.
UM went ahead 63-0 in the third quarter before the Tigers (1-3) answered with their first points of the contest.
After Edwards scored on a three-yard run with 2:22 remaining in the third quarter, SSU freshman running back DeQuan Daniels took the hand-off on the Tigers next possession and raced untouched for a 75 yard touchdown run with 2:09 on the clock. John Barron's extra point kick made the score 63-7.
Miami (3-0) answered quickly as Stacy Coley returned the ensuing kickoff 88 yards for a score to extend the Hurricanes lead to 70-7.
Edwards added a nine-yard touchdown run with 20 seconds left in the quarter to round out the scoring.
Both head coaches agreed to play a 12-minute fourth quarter.

Before the game, both coaches wanted both squads to leave the game injury free.
"That was my greatest fear from the time it got to 35-0, to be honest with you. We went quickly to second and then quickly to third teams, said UM head coach Al Golden. "I had a long talk with coach [Earnest Wilson] before and a long talk with him after. I've been there. I was on the other side of those at Temple. I wanted to make sure he knew we were doing everything in our power not to [run up the score], and I know on his end he was trying to teach his team how to keep fighting. I've been in his shoes. I just wanted him to know from our standpoint, we were trying to be gracious in victory and not do anything dumb," he added.
Despite the score, SSU produced its best rushing effort of the year, tallying 139 yards.
Savannah State finished the game with 183 total offensive yards.
Daniels ran for 75 yards and a touchdown on one carry for SSU. Antonio Bostick completed three passes for 23 yards but was sacked three times and threw two interceptions while Jake Durham caught two passes for 18 yards. Daniels ended the contest with 133 all-purpose yards.
John Wilson led the defense with 12 tackles.

I've been part of a national championship team. And I've been part of a not only national championship team, but I've also been part of a winning team. I believe that we can build a team at Savannah State that's just like these guys," said SSU head coach Earnest Wilson III.  "So all I'm doing is learning from what Coach Golden is doing. Learning what I need to do to get to that level. It's my first time and I'll get there. And I believe that these kids will get there, if they can come out and fight. I know we had some quirky things happen at the same time we moved the ball at times. We exposed them at times. So we've just got to keep working and keep getting better and when we get our 12-month strength program and all that other good stuff and not be together for just eight weeks, we'll be fine," Wilson added.
John Wilson led the defense with 12 tackles.
Miami had 637 yards of offense with 324 rushing and 313 passing. The UM defense had four sacks, four interceptions and limited the Tigers to just 44 passing yards.
Ryan Williams passed for 176 yards and two touchdowns while Allen Hurns caught two passes for 100 yards and a touchdown. Jermaine Grace had five tackles for the defense.
It was the last non-conference game for the Tigers, who open Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play with a home game against Delaware State (0-3) on September 28 in Savannah, Georgia.
