Volleyball Opens Highlander Classic

RADFORD, Va. – In the opening day of the 2013 Radford University Highlander Classic, Savannah State fell to host school Radford in three sets, 12-25, 14-25, and 24-26.

The Lady Tigers were led on the floor by sophomore Bianca Brochu who recorded five kills in the match. Senior Bridgette Stephens led the team on defense with nine kills.

A balanced attack from the Highlanders resulted in four stat leaders, as Savannah Cantrell, Jordan Watson, Jesse Miedema, and Savanna Burton all had seven kills. Rachel Flores led in digs with seven.

SSU falls to 0-13 on the season as Radford improves to 9-4.

Radford pushed out to a quick 8-3 lead in the opening set behind six service points from Megan McKenzie. Brochu ended the run with a kill.

Later, the Highlanders went up 15-5 behind a 5-0 run. SSU managed only seven more points as the home team took a 1-0 lead with a 25-12 win.

The second set echoed the first as SSU struggled to get the offense going, managing only six kills, while Radford recorded 11 en route to a 25-14 set win and a 2-0 lead in the match.

In the final set, SSU trailed 6-8 early. Freshman Caitlynn Masoe sparked a 3-1 run for the Lady Tigers with a kill. Asiha Williams had a service ace in the run that tied the game up at nine apiece.

Midway through the set, the score was knotted up two more times before Radford recorded four straight kills for a 15-12 lead.

Brochu helped the Lady Tigers back into the set with three straight service points to cut the home teams lead to 18-20.

SSU senior Bryana Gadis recorded a kill late in the set to put SSU within one point, 22-21, of a win. A ball handling error from Radford tied the game up at 23, later.

Brochu recorded her final kill to tie the game at 24. Back-to-back kills from the Highlanders ended the match.

The Lady Tigers are scheduled to play Tulane University at 10 a.m. on Saturday, and then will face a rematch with Radford at 2 p.m. to close out the two-day tournament.

SSU will play on their hardwood for the first time this season on Wednesday, September 25. The Lady Tigers host The Citadel at 6 p.m. in Wilcox-Wiley Gymnasium.
