Volleyball Closes Out ISTAP Collegiate Cup

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Saturday, Savannah State volleyball closed out the ISTAP Collegiate Cup in Montgomery, Alabama, with losses to Arkansas at Pine Bluff and host Alabama State.

The Lady Tigers fall to 0-12 on the season. They are set to play in a fourth and final tournament this weekend, before making their home debut on September 25 against The Citadel. First serve in Wilcox-Wiley is set for 6 p.m.

SSU opened the first game, against Arkansas-Pine Bluff, with a 3-2 run, behind kills from Christian Lyle on serves from Justice Dilworth. An SSU error knotted up the game at three.

Later, the Golden Lions jumped out to a 12-7 lead with a service ace from Ashlie Jones. Asiha Williams recorded a service ace, and a kill from Dilworth got SSU within two of UAPB's lead, 10-12.

UAPB jumped out to a 21-13 lead later, behind a 6-0 run, capped by an SSU error. Down the stretch, SSU managed two more points - one behind a kill from Williams - but could only get within five points, as the Lady Lions went up 1-0 with a 25-15 game win.

The second game echoed the first as the Lady Lions used a late spurt to take a 21-14 lead. SSU senior Bryana Gadis recorded a kill late, but UAPB took a 2-0 lead with a 25-14 set win.

SSU kept up the battle in the third set. Gadis opened with back-to-back kills on serves from Dilworth and sets from Caitlynn Masoe and Bianca Brochu. An ace from Dilworth put SSU up 3-0 to open the set.

In the opening moments, the set was tied up four times, before a timeout was called by SSU. Knotted up at eight apiece, out of the pause, the teams again battled head-to-head.

An SSU error tied the game at 10. After SSU pushed out to a 14-12 lead behind a kill from Dilworth, UAPB battled back to tie it up at 14.

Tied at 18, two costly errors from SSU resulted in a 20-18 Lady Lion advantage.  Later, Dilworth recorded a kill out of a pause, and Williams recorded an ace to tie the game for the 10th time, at 20 all.

Down the stretch, UAPB went on a 4-0 run for a 24-20 advantage, and the match point. But, SSU was not done. Brochu fired in a service ace and UAPB recorded an error on Brochu's next serve to get the Lady Tigers within two points, 23-24, of forcing a fourth set.

An error from the Lady Tigers ended the game and gave the Lady Lions their third win of the year.

Dilworth recorded a season-high nine kills, leading the Lady Tigers. Williams recorded a season-high 16 digs, leading SSU. Gadis had eight kills and 12 digs as well.

Ayanna Parker led the Lady Lions with 11 kills while Courtney Brand led in digs with 15.

In a similar story, the Lady Tigers struggled in the first two sets against host Alabama State - in SSU's nightcap - but regained some momentum in the final set.

Alabama State took a 10-3 lead quickly in the opening game. Gadis recorded a kill and an ASU error cut the home team's lead to 10-5. Later a 3-0 run gave ASU a 15-7 lead, prompting SSU to take a pause.

SSU struggled down the stretch as the Lady Hornets jumped out to a 23-11 lead. The Lady Tigers managed only one more point in the game behind a kill from Dilworth, as ASU captured a 1-0 lead with a 25-12 win.

Two costly ASU errors and a kill from Dilworth gave SSU a 7-4 lead early in the second game. The Lady Hornets recovered with a 5-0 run for a 9-7 advantage. A lead they would not relinquish.

Late in the set, Masoe recorded a kill for SSU's final point as the Lady Hornets took a 2-0 lead behind an 8-0 run for a 25-11 set win.

In the third game, Dilworth recorded a service ace for a 6-3 SSU lead early. Later, a kill from Gadis put SSU up 10-4.

ASU responded with a 5-1 run to cut the Lady Tigers lead to 9-11. The Lady Hornets' Ellyn Jones then helped her team to a 14-11 lead behind two service aces on a 5-0 run.

A kill from Gadis knotted the game up at 19 later. Three errors, two from SSU, put ASU up 21-20. A kill from the Lady Tigers gave them a two point advantage, 22-20.

The Lady Tigers stayed in the fight out of a timeout, as Dilworth recorded two more kills to get SSU within three points of the win. ASU sealed up their fifth win of the season with a 25-22 game win.

Dilworth led the Lady Tigers with seven kills and a service ace. Senior Bridgette Stephens led the team in digs with seven.

Myla Marshall led the Lady Hornets with nine kills. Jamie Coleman and Khryssnee Madison led in digs with seven each.
