Volleyball Drops Matches In ISTAP Collegiate Cup

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Savannah State volleyball fell in the opening games of the ISTAP Collegiate Cup hosted by Alabama State in Montgomery, Alabama on Friday.

In their second match on Friday, the Lady Tigers won their first set of the 2013 campaign against the University of New Orleans. SSU succumb in four sets, however, falling 1-3 to the Lady Privateers. In the opening game of the day, SSU fell 0-3 to Jacksonville State.

SSU concludes their third tournament of the season with matches against the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff and host school Alabama State. For more information on Saturday's games, including live stats and video links, click here.

The Lady Tigers will play in a fourth and final tournament next week, before their home opener of the 2013 season on September 25. They host The Citadel in Wilcox-Wiley Gymnasium at 6 p.m.

Southern Discomfort

In the opening set against New Orleans, SSU took an 11-6 lead with back-to-back kills from Justice Dilworth on sets from freshman Caitlynn Masoe.

The lead for the Lady Tigers held midway through the set, but the Lady Privateers went on a 5-0 run to cut SSU's advantage to one point, 14-13, prompting an SSU timeout.

Out of the timeout, UNO closed out the first set with a big run for a 25-15 game win.

Into the second set, SSU came out strong with kills from Christian Lyle and Bianca Brochu for a 5-2 lead, early in the game.

SSU held on to the lead for the entire set, despite runs from the Lady Privateers. A 5-0 run, capped with a kill from Lyle prompted a UNO timeout, as SSU took a 16-13 lead, later.

Out of the pause, the Lady Tigers held to their command with a kill from Lyle, and several from Brochu.

Later, Bryana Gadis marked a kill to put the Lady Tigers within two points of the set win, 23-18.

New Orleans was unfazed as they fired back with two straight points to cut SSU's lead to 23-20. Masoe responded with a kill to put SSU within reach at 24-20.

The Lady Privateers again added two points to cut SSU's lead to 24-22, prompting the Lady Tigers to take a timeout.

After the pause, UNO's Celeste Ramirez served up a ball for the Lady Privateers, and on the return, Gadis recorded the 25th point for the Lady Tigers, for their first set win of the season, 25-22.

In the third set, SSU's momentum carried over as they held neck-and-neck with the Lady Privateers, knotting the game up six times, the last at eight points apiece.

UNO broke the tie with back-to-back points for a 10-8 lead. Later, a kill from Brochu put SSU within one point of UNO's lead, 12-13.

The Lady Privateers broke away though with a 5-2 run for an 18-14 advantage. Ramirez blasted away three straight service points to lift her team to a 21-14 lead, extended the run to 8-2.

Out of a second timeout, SSU tried to claw back into the game, but struggled as the Lady Privateers recorded a final 3-2 run for a 25-17 game win.

In the Lady Tigers first fourth set of the year, they took an early 8-5 advantage, prompting New Orleans to take a pause.

A 5-0 run, out of the timeout, from UNO put them up 10-8. SSU knotted the game up at 10, but UNO regained the lead with a three point run.

Later, Ramirez recorded an ace for a 19-14 UNO lead. The Lady Tigers managed only two more points as UNO captured their first match win of the year with a 25-16 set win.

Lyle led the Lady Tigers with a season-high and career-high 11 kills, followed by Brochu with a season-high and career-high 10 kills.

Senior Asiha Williams, Masoe and freshman Alexis Washington led the Lady Tiger in digs with 11 apiece. Dilworth and Masoe each had three aces in the contest.

Marti Richmiller led UNO with 11 kills, while Cara Sander recorded 10. Lauren Levy had 25 digs for the Lady Privateers.  UNO improved to 1-9 overall, while SSU fell to 0-10 on the season.

Closing In

SSU opened the day with a match against Jacksonville State, and after falling in the first two sets, came close to a victory in the third set.

The Lady Tigers dropped the first two sets to the Gamecocks, 5-25 and 14-25, but rallied in the third set.

Masoe and Brochu recorded back-to-back kills to knot the set up at eight after the Lady Tigers trailed early.

Later, the Gamecocks took an 18-14 lead behind a 3-0 run. Out of a pause SSU fell behind 20-15, but continued to fight, cutting Jacksonville State's lead to 20-18 behind a kill from Dilworth.

Later an SSU error gave JSU a 23-19 lead, prompting an SSU timeout. Late in the set, Lyle recorded a kill to put SSU within three of JSU's lead, 21-24.

The Gamecocks sealed up their third win of the season with a kill from Liza Pflugradt for a 25-21 set win.

Lyle and Brochu led the Lady Tigers with five kills apiece while Washington and Masoe led in digs with six each.

Kacy Clinkenbeard led JSU with eight kills while Kelly Cole led in digs with 13.
