Volleyball Drops Two In Winthrop Classic

ROCK HILL, S.C. – In their opening games of the 2013 season, the Savannah State volleyball squad dropped two matches in
the final day of the Winthrop University Classic.

SSU fell to Tennessee Tech Saturday morning in straight sets, 19-25, 15-25, and 13-25. In the second game, Saturday evening, SSU fell to host Winthrop in three sets, 12-25, 13-25, and 17-25. The Lady Tigers fall to 0-3 on the season.

The Lady Tigers travel to DeLand, Florida this coming weekend for the Stetson University Tournament. They are scheduled to play host Stetson twice, as well as Providence College and fellow Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) member Bethune-Cookman.

Technical Blow

Tennessee Tech opened the first set with a 4-1 run, but the Lady Tigers fired back with a 5-2 run knotting the game up at six.
A service ace from Kennedy Wade put Tech up 16-10 midway through the set. Out of a timeout, SSU struggled to get back into the set as Tech went up 20-13 on a kill from Christine Maci.

The Lady Tigers, with kills from Caitlynn Masoe, and Bryana Gadis, fought back to get within five of Tech's lead, 20-15.

SSU freshman Gabrielle Nathaniel registered a kill to get SSU within four points, 21-17, the closest the Lady Tigers came to getting the set win.

Tech closed out the set win with a 5-3 run, as the Lady Tigers fought hard down the stretch. Nathaniel recorded two more kills in the final run.

Off the closing momentum of the first set, Tech opened the second set with an 8-0 run. After several costly SSU errors, Tech took an 18-5 lead.

Late in the set, trailing 22-10, Gadis served up four straight point serves. The late rally attempt fell short as Tech closed out the second set with two kills.

In the third set, Tech again jumped out early behind several strong kills and SSU errors. Leading 20-8, SSU called a timeout.

Out of the pause, the Lady Tigers managed back-to-back points, but Tech sealed up the match win behind a 25th point kill from Ellen Conti.

Nathaniel led the Lady Tigers with nine kills, 12.5 points, and the Lady Tigers only service ace, as well as five blocks. Fellow newcomer Alexis Washington led the team in digs with eight.

House Wins

Host school Winthrop opened the first set against SSU with a 16-7 run, prompting a Lady Tigers timeout. SSU sophomore Bianca Brochu recorded a kill out of the timeout, but the Lady Eagles responded with a two quick points for an 18-8 lead.

Winthrop closed out the 25-12 set win behind a kill and service ace from Rachel Lenz.

In the second set, Winthrop took a 3-0 lead, but SSU stayed determined. Gadis opened a 6-0 run for the Lady Tigers with a kill and then five service points including three service aces, prompting a timeout from Winthrop.

Out of the timeout SSU led 6-3, but Winthrop bounced back with three straight points to tie the set up at six.

SSU regained the lead with a kill from Nathaniel and took an 8-6 lead on an attack error from Winthrop.

The Lady Eagles then took over the set with a 6-2 run. Washington recorded a service ace for SSU to cut Winthrop's lead to 14-11 after the Lady Eagles big run.

SSU's fierce offensive came to a halt as Winthrop closed out the second set win with an 11-2 run for a 25-13 set win.

Into the final set, SSU could not manage the offensive prowess of their second set, falling behind quickly. Winthrop took a 14-7 lead on an SSU error, prompting the Lady Tigers to take a timeout.

Winthrop closed out the set, and match, win out of a second SSU timeout.  Lenz, the tournament MVP, served up a point for Winthrop, and Jessie Vicic served up the final point. SSU fell 25-17 in the final set.

Gadis led the Lady Tigers with seven kills, four service aces, and four digs. Washington again led SSU in digs with nine.
