Lady Tigers Open 2013 Season

Box Score ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Savannah State volleyball team opened the 2013 season Friday in Rock Hill, South Carolina, with the opening game of the Winthrop University Classic. SSU fell 0-3 to Fordham University.

The Lady Rams downed SSU in three sets, 25-12, 25-12, and 25-15 to open their season with a win.

SSU continues in the tournament with two games on Saturday. The Lady Tigers open the day against Tennessee Tech at 10 a.m. and close out against Winthrop at 7 p.m.

The Lady Tigers opened their season the right way. Sophomore Christian Lyle served up an ace on the first serve in the opening set.

Later, Fordham took a 6-2 lead on a service ace from Lisa Hipp. SSU battled back with a kill from sophomore Justice Dilworth to cut the Lady Rams lead to 7-4.

Fordham jumped out to a 17-10 lead behind a 6-0 run, prompting a timeout from SSU, midway through the set.

Out of the timeout, the Lady Tigers managed only two more points in the opening set as the Lady Rams concluded the first set win with an 8-2 run.

Building off their momentum, Fordham jumped out to a 13-8 lead in the second set, behind several SSU errors.

Out of a timeout, Fordham extended their lead to 20-8 with help from Hipp, who recorded three kills in the run.

SSU continued to fight, as Bryana Gadis recorded a kill on a set from freshman Caitlynn Masoe. Later, SSU sophomore Bianca Brochu recorded back-to-back kills with assists from freshman Gabrielle Nathaniel and Gadis.

Hipp closed out the second set for Fordham with a service ace.

Despite being down two sets, SSU fired back in the third set. Nathaniel recorded a kill to put the Lady Tigers up 2-1. A kill from Brochu kept SSU up, 4-3, moments later.

Fordham's Maria Rodenberg recorded three straight service aces to give the Lady Rams a 9-4 lead. The Lady Rams would not relinquish the lead again on their way to a match win.

Hipp helped the Lady Rams to a 3-0 run behind three point-earning serves late in the set. A kill from Fordham's Brennan Delsing ended the set and the match.

The Lady Tigers were led by Brochu on offense, who recorded five kills on 10 attacks. Dilworth and Lyle each had two service aces. Masoe led the team in digs with eight.

Delsing led the Lady Rams with 10 kills on 22 attacks. Rodenberg led the team with 11 digs and recorded five service aces. Hipp also recorded five service aces and eight kills.
