Box Score SAVANNAH, Ga.- Hampton rallied from an eight-point deficit in the second half and went on to defeat Savannah State 71-68 in overtime in a game played at Tiger Arena before a crowd of 1,077 fans.
The loss ended a seven-game winning streak for the Tigers while Hampton extended their winning streak to four games.
The Pirates trailed 43-35 with 12:42 left in the second period before putting together a 10-0 run to go ahead 45-43 with 10:42 remaining.
SSU (12-10, 6-2) regrouped and managed to build a 56-50 advantage with 3:59 on the clock but six unanswered points by the Pirates knotted the score at 56 with 2:13 left.
Arnold Louis' layup with 1:55 left gave SSU a 58-56 lead but Deron Power's layup with two seconds remaining tied the contest and sent it to overtime as SSU's
Jyles Smith missed a 3-point attempt at the buzzer.
In the extra period, Hampton led 62-61 but stretched their lead to 70-64 with 21 seconds left.
The Tigers battled back to get within two as Louis made a layup and two free throws to make it a 70-68 game with 13 seconds remaining.
Ramon Mercardo made a free throw for Hampton with 12 seconds left and a 3-point attempt by SSU's
Rashad Hassan missed with three seconds left.
Louis led SSU with 26 points and 10 rebounds while Hassan added 17 points and 10 boards.
Preston Blackman chipped in 13 points.
As a team, SSU shot 36.4 percent from the field and were out-rebounded 39 to 34.
Hampton(9-13, 6-3) jumped out to a 6-0 lead but the Tigers answered with 11 straight points for a 11-6 lead with 13:19 left.
Savannah State led by as many as eight in the first half and led 31-28 at the break.
Hampton had five players in double figures and was led by Powers' 15 points and eight rebounds.
