Volleyball Falls To S.C. State In MEAC Match

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Savannah State volleyball squad dropped a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) match to South Carolina State in three sets on Sunday in Willcox-Wiley Gymnasium.

It was the second bout between the rival schools. S.C. State won the first match in October in Orangeburg, South Carolina. SSU falls to 0-28 on the season and 0-8 in the MEAC. S.C. State improves to 4-21 and 3-5 in the conference.

SSU sophomore Justice Dilworth led the field with 10 kills and four digs. Asiha Williams led the defense with nine digs.

The Lady Bulldogs were led by Desire Waller with eight kills. Alyse Lewis, Erica Pritchett and Marissa Lawrence led a balanced offense with six kills apiece.

S.C State jumped out to an early 6-1 lead in the opening set and held onto it despite a late run from the Lady Tigers, for a 25-19 win and a 1-0 lead. Pritchett had five kills in the game, leading the field with a .444 hitting percentage.

SSU took the first lead in the second game on a kill from Williams. But, the Lady Bulldogs quickly regained the momentum going up 9-5 on a 5-0 run. Later, SSU went on a 5-0 run to cut the visitors lead to 18-12, but the Lady Bulldogs took control down the stretch, winning 25-18. Dilworth led the field in the second set with five kills.

In the final set, S.C. State went up 12-6 early, prompting SSU to take a timeout. Out of the pause, the Lady Bulldogs sealed up their fourth win of the season with a 25-16 set win. Waller led the field in the final set with four kills.

The Lady Tigers have two games left in the 2013 season. They play North Carolina A&T State on Friday, November 8 at 5 p.m. in Willcox-Wiley. On Sunday November, 10 they play North Carolina Central in their final game. First serve in Willcox-Wiley is set for 1 p.m.
