Volleyball Wins Senior Day

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Not only did the Savannah State volleyball team win Senior Day on Sunday, but they broke a losing streak that dated back to 2010, garnered the program's first Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) win since joining the conference in 2011, and sent three seniors out in style.

SSU owned the win from the first serve. The team had a combined .231 hitting percentage in the 3-1 win over North Carolina Central. Three of the Lady Tigers ended in double digits on offense, while two ended in double digits on defense.

Sophomore Bianca Brochu led SSU with a career high 14 kills. Sophomore Justice Dilworth recorded a career high 11 kills, while Christian Lyle recorded 11 kills, as well.  Senior Asiha Williams led the team defensively with 11 digs, while freshman Alexis Washington recorded 10 digs.

It was the Lady Tigers final game of the regular season; they end with a 1-29 overall record and a 1-9 conference mark. The win broke a 91 match losing streak, dating back to a 3-0 win over NCAA Division II team Paine College on November 4, 2010.

The last NCAA Division I win for SSU was against Presbyterian College on November 5, 2009. SSU won 3-2. Interim head coach Jolanta Graham garners her first win as a collegiate head coach.

After falling to N.C. Central (3-0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-18)) in their first meeting this season, the Lady Tigers battled in the opening set. After a back-and-forth, NCCU's J'Nae Raynor tied the game at 19 with back-to-back service aces.

Later, senior Bryana Gadis recorded a kill to tie the game up at 21. Gadis then served up a 4-0 run, including a service ace. Lyle recorded the final kill for a 25-21 set win.

The Lady Eagles got on a hot run late in the second set, taking a 22-15 lead on a kill by Ashley Johnson. Out of an SSU timeout, Dilworth sparked some offense with a kill that began a 5-1 run for the Lady Tigers.

NCCU led 23-20 out of a timeout. Dilworth recorded a kill, but two costly SSU errors gave the Lady Eagles a 25-21 set win, tying the match at 1-1.

In the third game SSU dominated, opening with a 9-3 run that prompted the Lady Eagles to take a timeout. Out of the pause, SSU held onto their lead as NCCU begin to mount some offense.

Later, Brochu laid down a kill on a set from freshman Caitlynn Masoe to lift SSU to a 20-15 lead. The Lady Eagles were forced to take a timeout.

Brochu then served up five straight points for SSU that included two kills from Williams for a 24-16 lead. Dilworth recorded the final point for SSU with a kill on set from Masoe for a 25-16 game win.

Masoe led the field with 40 assists on kills and ended the season with 496 assists overall, averaging 5.39 per game.

In the final set, SSU opened with a 7-4 run capped by a kill from Brochu. NCCU bounced back, cutting the Lady Tigers lead to 9-7 moments later.

Later, three NCCU errors lifted SSU to a 17-12 lead, prompting the visitors to take a timeout. Out of the timeout, SSU held on to the lead, and then went up 21-15 on a kill form Dilworth.

But, the Lady Eagles stayed in the fight, looking for the chance to force a fifth set. NCCU used a 4-0 run to cut into SSU's lead, 19-23.   Out of a timeout, two errors – one on SSU, one on NCCU – gave the Lady Tigers a 24-20 lead.

Gadis recorded the final kill of her collegiate career to give SSU the win.

Gadis ended with eight kills and seven digs on the day. Senior Bridgette Stephens concluded her career with seven digs.
For the Lady Eagles, Kalin Russell led the field with 18 kills, while Raynor led in digs with 10.

At the end of the 2013 season, Dilworth and Lyle finish at the top of the stats with 141 kills apiece. Gadis ends with 133, while Brochu has 126 overall. Washington led the Lady Tigers in digs with 216, followed by Gadis with 167.
