NORFOLK, Va.- Norfolk State blocked a 49-yard field goal attempt by SSU's
John Barron with two seconds left as the Spartans defeated Savannah State 26-24 at Price Stadium.
SSU rallied from a eight point deficit in the fourth quarter to take a 24-23 lead with just over five minutes left in the game.
Norfolk State answered the Tigers' score with a 33-yard field goal by Marouf Cameron with 1:10 left on the clock.
Savannah State started their final drive of the contest at the Spartans 47 but could only muster 15 yards to the NSU 32 where the drive stalled.Â
After two consecutive timeouts by Norfolk State, SSU place-kicker
John Barron lined up to attempt the potential game-winning field goal but the kick was blocked which gave the Spartans the victory.
Antonio Bostick passed for a career-high 337 yards for Savannah State. Bostick's previous best game came last season against North Carolina Central, as he threw for 332 yards.
The Tigers had two turnovers in the first quarter as Bostick threw an interception on SSU's first possession of the game and
Sheldon Barnes fumbled at the NSU one yard line.
SSU scored on their first drive of the second quarter as Barron kicked a 26-yard field goal, with 12:46 left.
The key play on the drive was a 21-yard pass completion from Bostick to
Kris Drummond on third and 14.
After stopping the Spartans on their next possession, SSU's offense scored their first touchdown of the contest when Bostic threw a 37-yard touchdown to Georgia Tech transfer
Jeremy Moore, with 9:06 on the clock. The two-point rush attempt by
Roosevelt Isom failed and SSU led 9-0.
Norfolk State scored on their next two drives with Cameron hitting a 32-yard field goal and Tyler Clark throwing a three-yard touchdown to Lyden Trail to take a 10-9 lead to end the first half.
Clark ran for a two-yard touchdown early in their third quarter to extend NSU's lead to 17-9.
Following a SSU fumble and a missed field goal by Norfolk State, the Tigers managed a five-play, 73-yard drive that ended with Bostick tossing a seven-yard touchdown to Edward Lackey with 1:15 left in the third quarter. The two-point conversion pass failed and NSU led 17-15.
The key play in the drive was a 39-yard reception by
Cantrell Frazier along with a 15-yard facemask penalty by Norfolk State that gave SSU a first down at the Spartans 19.
Bostick threw his second interception of the game early in their fourth quarter which Norfolk State converted into a touchdown. With NSU (2-4, 2-0) missing the extra point, SSU trailed 23-15 with 14:38 remaining in the game.
After trading punts, the Tigers strung together a 45-yard drive which ended in a 30-yard field goal by Barron to pull Savannah State within 23-18 with 7:51 left.
On their next possession, SSU drove 71 yards in just two plays as Bostick hit Drummond for a 14-yard touchdown with 5:02 remaining. The two point pass attempt failed but Savannah State held a slim 24-23 lead.
The key play on the short drive was a 57-yard reception by freshman running back
DeQuan Daniels that gave SSU a first down at the Spartans 14.
The crowd of 6,272 saw Norfolk State took their next possession and drove 49 yards as Cameron hit the game-winning 33-yard field goal with 1:10 left.
Savannah State (1-5, 0-2) had 408 yards of offense but they also had three interceptions, lost two fumbles and gave up five sacks.
Lereginald Veals ran for 41 yards while Daniels had four receptions for 75 yards. SSU had four players with at least 70 receiving yards. Defensively,
Marquis Smith and
Justin Dixon each had career-highs with 16 and 15 tackles respectively.
John Wilson added 11 tackles.
Rolandan Finch ran for 134 yards for NSU while Clark passed for 168 yards. Marcell Coke had 12 tackles.
