Volleyball Drops First Conference Road Game

ORANGEBURG, S.C. – In their third Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference game of the season, and first road conference match, the Savannah State volleyball squad dropped a close first set, en route to a 0-3 loss to South Carolina State in Orangeburg, South Carolina Friday evening.

SSU continues to look for their first win of the 2013 campaign, falling to 0-19 and 0-3 in the MEAC with the loss.  The Lady Bulldogs improved to 2-15 overall and 2-1 in the MEAC.

In the opening game, SSU took a 8-5 lead behind a 5-0 run that included kills from Justice Dilworth and Bianca Brochu, and was capped by a service ace from Christian Lyle.

S.C. State fired back to tie the game at nine. Later, SSU's Bryana Gadis knocked down a service ace to cut the home team's lead to 16-14.

Lyle recorded a kill out of an SSU timeout to keep the Lady Tigers close to the Lady Bulldogs growing 18-15 lead.

Down the stretch, S.C. State took a 21-16 lead, but SSU responded with a 3-0 run to cut the Lady Bulldogs lead to three points.
S.C. State again extended their lead, with a 3-1 run for a 24-20 advantage late in the first set.

SSU freshman Caitlynn Masoe kept the battle alive for the Lady Tigers recorded back-to-back kills. An SSU service error ended the set. S.C. State took a 1-0 lead with a 25-22 game win.

SSU didn't let the Lady Bulldogs hold on to their momentum from the close win, taking a 10-5 lead early in the second set behind a 5-0 run that was sparked by a kill from Dilworth.

S.C. State fought back into the game, tying the game at 14 apiece, prompting an SSU timeout.

Out of the pause, the Lady Bulldogs took their first lead of the second game on an SSU error. Lyle tied the game at 15 with a kill on a set from Masoe.

Down the stretch, S.C. State jumped out to a 23-17 lead behind an 8-2 run. Dilworth recorded one more point for the Lady Tigers on a kill, before the home team took a 2-0 lead in the match behind a 25-18 set win.

Behind the big second game win, the Lady Bulldogs came out in full force in the third set, jumping out to a huge 14-3 lead behind 11 service points from Victoria Ferguson.

The Lady Tigers were unable to climb back in the game midway through as the home team took a 23-7 lead, prompting an SSU pause.

Out of the pause, S.C. State put up the match point, but SSU continued the fight. Led by Masoe, SSU put up 10 straight points to cut the home team's lead to 24-17. Asiha Williams and Lyle recorded two big block assists during the run.

A kill from S.C. State ended the Lady Tigers massive run and gave the home team their second match win of the season.

Lyle and Dilworth led the Lady Tigers in the loss with seven kills apiece. Gadis led in digs with eight. Alexis Washington added seven digs. Williams had four block assists.

Desire Waller led the Lady Bulldogs with nine kills. Ferguson led in digs with 11.

SSU continues their weekend road trip with a nonconference match against East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina Saturday at 3 p.m.
