Volleyball Drops Nonconference Match To Alabama State

SAVANNAH, Ga. – In the second to last nonconference game of the 2013 season, the Savannah State volleyball team fell to Alabama State in straight sets on Sunday in Willcox-Wiley Gym.

Senior Bryana Gadis and sophomore Justice Dilworth led the Lady Tigers with six kills each. Dilworth and Alexis Washington led in digs with six each. SSU falls to 0-24 on the season.

Alabama State (14-12) was led by Rachel Smith who had eight kills and no errors on 12 attacks for a .667 hitting percentage. The team had a combined .391 hitting percentage. Brooke Beasley led in digs with nine.

SSU took an early lead with a 6-2 run in the first set. The Lady Hornets tied the game at nine apiece, and then took the lead behind a kill from Latoya Ellington.

Out of an SSU timeout, Alabama State put on the gas, taking an 11-17 with a 7-1 run. The Lady Hornets took a 1-0 match lead with a 25-18 set win.

The second game was all Alabama State as they took a 2-0 lead with a 25-7 win. In the third set, SSU fell behind early as the Lady Hornets went up 21-9 and looked to seal up the match win.

Late in the final set, the Lady Tigers came alive with an 8-1 run sparked by a kill from sophomore Christian Lyle. Asiha Williams served up four of the service points, while Lyle served up the back four.

Chantia Taylor recorded a kill to cut Alabama State's lead to 24-18, prompting the visitors to take a timeout. Dilworth recorded a kill out of the timeout, but Myla Marshall responded with a kill to solidify the match win for ASU with a 25-19 set win.

The Lady Tigers have six games remaining in the regular season. They head on the road this coming weekend for two Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) matches against Bethune-Cookman and Florida A&M, before returning home on October 30 for the final nonconference game. First serve against Jacksonville University is at 6 p.m.
