Volleyball Falls To N.C. Central

DURHAM, N.C. – In a key Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) match Friday night, the Savannah State volleyball team fell in straight sets (15-25, 15-25, 16-25) to North Carolina Central in Durham, North Carolina.

Both teams entered the match looking for their first win of the season. SSU falls to 0-21 and 0-4 in the MEAC, while NCCU improved to 1-20 and 1-3 in conference.

The Lady Tigers continue a five-game road stretch on Sunday with a visit to Greensboro, N.C. and a MEAC match against North Carolina A&T.

SSU sophomore Justice Dilworth led the Lady Tigers for the third straight game with eight kills. Sophomore Christian Lyle added seven kills. Freshman Alexis Washington led the team on defense with seven digs.

The Lady Eagles were helmed by Kelsey Murhpy who led the field in hitting percentage (.545) and in kills (14). Da'Sha Brown, who leads the team overall, recorded 13 kills with a .417 hitting percentage.

N.C. Central used a balanced defense to get their first win behind six digs from Murphy, Brown and Ashley McCarthey.  The Lady Eagles combined for 41 kills and a .349 hitting percentage.

In the opening set, SSU fell behind early as NCCU took a 13-8 lead, prompting the Lady Tigers to take a pause.

Down the stretch, SSU continued to fight, but back-to-back aces from Kalin Russell and a kill from Brown put the home team up 21-13. The Lady Tigers managed two more points before NCCU took a 1-0 match lead with a 25-15 game win.

In the second set, SSU trailed 6-9 before a 3-0 run – including two service aces from senior Bryana Gadis – tied the game at nine, prompting the Lady Eagles to take a timeout.

Out of the pause, the Lady Eagles took a 14-11 lead behind four straight points. NCCU took over behind six straight service points from Brown for a 21-14 advantage. The Lady Eagles took a 2-0 match lead with a 25-15 game win.

The third set echoed the second as NCCU broke away from a close score midway through for a 25-16 game win and their first match victory of the season.
