Tigers Snap Losing Streak

SAVANNAH, Ga.- Preston Blackman scored 20 points as Savannah State snapped a six-game losing skid with a 84-40 win over Allen at Tiger Arena.

In addition to being the leading scorer, Blackman joined the Savannah State 1,000-point club as he reached the mark with a pair of free throws with 15:15 left in the second half.

The crowd of 1,020 saw SSU's defense limit the Yellow Jackets (2-12) to make 21 turnovers and shoot 25.5 percent from the field.

The Tiger offense got going early, shooting 57.1 percent from the floor in the first half and 64.3 percent after intermission.

With the scored tied 2-2, Savannah State scored nine straight points for a 11-2 advantage with 16:48 left in the half.

Allen chipped away at the Tigers lead and a 3-pointer by Eric Russell pulled the visitors within 21-20 with 11:56 remaining.

That started a 12-0 run by SSU that eventually turned into a 19 point lead with 3:28 left before the break.

The Tigers led 48-28 at the half.

SSU ended the first period with a 5-0 run and started the second half with a 14-0 run to grab a 62-28 lead with 13:52 left in the game.

Allen could only get as close as 30 the rest of the way while they trailed by as many as 44 in the second half.

Savannah State (6-9) won the rebounding battle 38 to 24.

The Tigers made 24 of 29 free throw attempts while Allen made 8 of 10 attempts.

Rashad Hassan added 19 points for SSU while Robert Burger came off the bench to ship in 11. Cedric Smith contributed seven rebounds and four assists.

Eleven of the dozen Tigers that played scored at least three points.

Richard Johnson had 15 points for Allen.
