Tigers Upend Cookman For Fifth Straight Win

Box Score SAVANNAH, Ga.- Preston Blackman made two clutch free throws with two seconds left to give Savannah State a 43-40 win over Bethune-Cookman.
 
It was the fifth straight win for the Tigers who improved to 10-9 overall and 4-1 in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play.
 
SSU went the final 3:48 without a field goal.
 
The Tiger Arena crowd of 3,852 saw the Wildcats, who trailed by as many as 10 in the first half, rally to take a 33-28 lead with nine minutes left in the ballgame.
 
Down 36-31 with 6:37 remaining, SSU put together a 10-4 spurt to go ahead 41-38 with 1:02 on the clock.
 
Adrian Coleman's layup with 26 seconds pulled B-CU (7-13, 2-3) within one but Blackman nailed two free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
 
It was the third game in a row Blackman has been the team hero.
 
The senior guard tallied 41 points against Morgan State on January 14, made the game-winning jumper against Florida A&M on Jan. 19 and made the game clinching free throws to down Cookman.
 
Arnold Louis came off the bench to led the Tigers with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
 
SSU shot 37.5 percent from the field while Cookman was not far behind with 37.2 percent.
 
Both squads made 50 percent of the free throws.
 
The game, which was televised by ESPNU, saw the Tigers jump out to the early lead.
 
SSU led 7-6 but  a 3-pointer by Robert Burger and a layup from Louis gave Savannah State a 12-6 lead with 10:51 on the clock.
 
With the score 15-11, SSU received a layup and a free throw from Louis as well as a dunk from Jyles Smith to open up a 21-11 cushion with 18 seconds left in the first half.
 
SSU led 21-12 at the break.
