Lady Tigers Drop Two Games At Morehead State Tournament

MOREHEAD, Ky. – The Savannah State volleyball team fell in their first two games of the Morehead State Eagle Invitational in Morehead, Kentucky, Friday.

The Lady Tigers fell in three sets (7-25, 7-25, 8-25) to Morehead State in the opening game of the day. Bryana Gadis led the team with three kills. Freshman Jasmine Waite added two.

In the second game on Friday, Savannah State fell to Valparaiso in three sets, but gave the Lady Crusaders some competition. In the opening set, a kill and service ace from Ashlee Butler gave SSU a 3-1 lead.  Another kill from Waite extended SSU's lead to 4-2 moments later.

Some costly errors from SSU knotted the score up at six. Valparaiso took advantage of the mistakes and eventually the lead on a kill from Kelsey Victor. Two more SSU errors and two kills gave the Crusaders an 11-6 lead.

Valparaiso extended their reach over SSU on an 8-1 run, taking a 17-7 lead. The Crusaders took the first set 25-12.

In the second set, Valparaiso continued on the momentum of the first game, jumping out to a quick 11-3 lead. Savannah State attempted a late rally on a three point run with kills from Gadis and Chikia Jones, but fell short as the Crusaders took a 2-0 lead with a 25-15 game win.

SSU trailed Valparaiso closely in the first few points. A kill from Jones with a set from Butler cut the Crusaders lead by one to 5-6.

The Crusaders extended their lead to 15-7 on a 10-1 run. The run proved to be too much for the Lady Tigers as Valparaiso sealed up the match victory with a 25-14 game win.

Gadis led the Lady Tigers with seven kills, while Kaneisha Hamilton ended with three digs. Jones had five kills in the match. Savannah State falls to 0-11 on the season.

The Lady Tigers conclude the volleyball tournament Saturday at 12 p.m. with a match against the University of Missouri.
