SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Savannah State volleyball squad fell to Charleston Southern in three sets Tuesday night in Wilcox-Wiley Gymnasium. The Lady Tigers continue to search for their first win of the 2012 season, falling to 0-9.
Early in the opening set,
Keandra Lewis gave SSU a 3-2 lead on a kill with a set from
Ashlee Butler. The Buccaneers fired back as the teams went point-for-point tying the game three times.
Charleston Southern then extended their lead on a 5-1 run with four kills and a SSU error. The offensive push continued as the visitors extended their lead to a 10 point margin at 23-13, moments later.
The Lady Tigers fired back with a 4-1 run on kills from
Chikia Jones,
Bryana Gadis, and
Bridgette Stephens. A costly service error ended the set as the Buccaneers took a 1-0 lead on a 25-17 set win.
In the second set, the teams went point-for-point tying the game four times, until Jones gave SSU a 10-9 lead on a kill with the set coming from Butler. Two SSU errors gave the Buccaneers an 11-10 lead moments later.
The visitors kept the momentum up, holding the Lady Tigers to only three more points as they took a 2-0 lead with a 25-13 set win.
Charleston Southern jumped out to a 7-3 lead early in the third set on a service ace. The Lady Tigers took advantage of some Buccaneer errors to cut the deficient. Lewis knotted the score up at nine on a service ace.
The Buccaneers jumped out to a 17-12 lead on two kills and several errors. The Lady Tigers continued to fight, but struggled with errors, going down 22-15 a few minutes later. Down 17-24, Lewis breathed some life into the end with a service ace for SSU. But the rally was short lived as a service error ended the match with a 25-18 Charleston set win.
Lewis and Gadis led the Lady Tigers with 7 kills apiece, while Stephens added 7 digs.
The Lady Tigers head on the road for the rest of September. They will compete in the Morehead State Eagle Challenge in Morehead, Kentucky this coming weekend, and then will play in the Georgia Southern Tournament in Statesboro, Georgia.
SSU returns home on October 5 for a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference match against South Carolina State. First serve is set for 6 p.m.
