Box Score DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Savannah State volleyball squad dropped their second Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference game of the 2012 campaign to Bethune-Cookman, Sunday. The Lady Wildcats sealed up the match win, 0-3, after escaping for a close first set.
In the opening set, the Lady Tigers battled with Cookman going point-for-point as the game was tied up nine times. An attack error from the Lady Wildcats knotted the score up at 10, prompting a Cookman timeout.
Out of the timeout, the Lady Wildcats jumped to a 15-10 lead behind two service aces and a number of SSU errors. Cookman would not relinquish the lead for the rest of the set.
The Lady Tigers continued to battle, but Cookman tacked on three more points to extend their lead to 18-13 moments later.
Coming out of an SSU timeout, the Lady Tigers cut the home teams lead to four, 20-16 with a two kills from freshman
Bianca Brochu and one from
Jasmine Waite. Trailing 19-22, Waite gave the Lady Tigers a chance on a service ace, prompting a B-CU timeout. The Lady Wildcats held a two point lead, 22-20.
Two kills from the Lady Wildcats and two errors' from SSU gave B-CU the close 25-21 set win.
Bryana Gadis led the Lady Tigers with three kills and four digs.
Kaneisha Hamilton added four digs.
B-CU used the first set's momentum to take an early 7-1 lead in the second set. Brochu knocked down a kill on a set from
Asiha Williams to help spark some offense from the Lady Tigers.
Keandra Lewis knocked down a kill moments later, cutting the home team's lead to five, 9-4. Two quick points from the Lady Wildcats prompted an SSU timeout.
The Lady Wildcats jumped out to a 17-6 lead on a 6-2 run coming out of the timeout. Gadis registered a kill on a set from Williams cutting B-CU's lead to 10 at 17-7. Several errors from the Lady Tigers and several key kills from the home team gave the Lady Wildcats a 25-12 set win and a 2-0 lead.
In the third and final set, the Lady Wildcats jumped out to an early 7-1 lead and continued with the offensive prowess taking the match win on a 25-16 set win.
Gadis led the Lady Tigers with eight kills and seven digs in the match. Hamilton led SSU in digs with nine, while
Ashlee Butler tacked five.
Chikia Jones had four kills.
The win was B-CU's first of the season. SSU drops to 0-18 overall and 0-2 in MEAC play. The Lady Tigers will travel to Charleston, South Carolina for a non-conference match with South Carolina Upstate Tuesday, October 2. First serve is set for 6 p.m.
SSU returns home on October 5 for a MEAC matchup with South Carolina State University in Wilcox-Wiley Gymnasium. The match is set to start at 6 p.m., and is free to the public.
