WASHINGTON, D.C.- Howard scored three touchdowns in the second quarter and added four more in the third quarter in a 59-9 win over Savannah State before a crowd of 2,955 at Greene Stadium.
The loss drops the Tigers to 0-4 overall and 0-2 in conference play.
Howard led 7-0 after the first quarter of play but ran their lead to 28-0 with 6:23 left in the first half with a Jareen Brown one yard touchdown run followed by two touchdown runs by Randy Liggins from 12 and 29 yards.
The Tigers prevented a shutout when
Preston McCarthy kicked a 33-yard field goal as time expired to end the second quarter.
Devin Rollins returned a blocked punt 23 yards for a touchdown to increase the Bison lead to 35-3 early in the third quarter.
Savannah State scored their lone touchdown with 12:37 left in the third as
Simon Heyward caught a 10-yard pass from
Victorian Hardison. The extra point kick failed and SSU trailed 35-9.
Justin Duncan (1 yard), William Parker (46 yards) and Aquaniu Freeman (71) all had touchdown runs for Howard (3-1, 2-0) in the third quarter to give them a 47-point cushion.
The Tigers did not have any fumbles or interceptions but gave up five sacks and 551 yards of offense to Howard.
Sheldon Barnes ran for 62 yards for SSU while Hardison came off the bench to pass for 137 yards and a touchdown.
Dylan Cook caught five passes for 72 yards while
John Wilson had nine tackles for the defense.
Freeman ran for 212 yards and two scores for the Bison. Liggins passed for 85 yards while Clayton Gidron caught two passes for 29 yards and Keith Pough and DeCarlos Knight had eight tackles each.
Savannah State will host Morgan State on October 7.
