Lady Tigers Fall To Florida A&M In MEAC Opener

Box Score TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Savannah State volleyball squad fell, 0-3, to the Florida A&M Lady Rattlers at the Al Lawson Center in Tallahassee, Florida Friday evening, in both teams Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference opener.

The Lady Rattlers jumped out to a quick 5-1 lead in the opening set behind some costly SSU errors and two kills. SSU fired back with two kills from freshman Jasmine Waite, to cut the home teams lead to two points, 3-5.

Florida A&M followed with two service ace's from Maria Ceccarelli and a kill by Katherine Huanec that sparked a 12-0 run for the Lady Rattlers. Waite ended the run on a kill with a set from Asiha Williams, but the Lady Rattlers offensive push continued as they sealed up the first set win, 25-8.

A bad set from Florida A&M and a kill from Waite gave SSU a 2-0 lead in the second set. The Lady Rattlers bounced back with a 5-0 run to take the 5-2 lead. A kill from Chikia Jones made it 3-5.

Midway through the match back-to-back kills from Huanec gave the home team a 15-6 lead.

Kills from Jones and freshman Justice Dilworth made it 16-9.  Huanec sealed up the second set win with two kills for a 25-17 Florida A&M win. Jones led the Lady Tigers in the set with four kills.

In the third and final set, the Lady Rattlers took an 8-2 lead on a costly SSU error. A kill from Waite made it 8-3 and moments later another kill from Keandra Lewis cut the home teams lead to three points, 8-5.

A 5-0 run from Florida A&M extended their lead to seven points, 13-5. SSU struggled to get their offense off the ground falling in the third set 10-25.

Waite led the Lady Tigers with seven kills, followed shortly by Bryana Gadis with six. Jones finished with five kills. Williams and Kaneisha Hamilton each had four digs.

The Lady Tigers fall to 0-17 on the season. Waite leads SSU with 72 kills overall. Gadis and Jones follow Waite with 63 and 53 kills, respectively. Gadis has 15 service aces and leads the team in digs with 85.

Savannah State travels across Florida to Daytona Beach to face MEAC rivals Bethune-Cookman, Sunday at 1 p.m.
