Tigers Stop SC State

Arnold Louis came off the bench to post his second straight double-double to lead Savannah State to a 73-60 victory over South Carolina State in the S-H-M Memorial Center before a crowd of 771 fans.

Louis had 14 points and 12 rebounds as SSU improved to 13-10 overall and7-2 in the MEAC.

Deric Rudolph and Joshua Montgomery each added 12 points for the Tigers. Preston Blackmon had seven assists

Savannah State led by as many as 16 points in the first half but the Bulldogs started the second half with a 9-0 run to cut their deficit to 41-36 with 17:39 left to go.

A jumper by Omar Sanders pulled SCSU within 45-42 with 14:51 remaining but a dunk by Rashad Hassan sparked a 9-0 run by the visitors as they upped their advantage to 54-42 with 10:07 on the clock.

A 3-pointer by Khalif Toombs stopped the bleeding but Savannah State went ahead 60-47 with 8:06 on the clock.

Brandon Riley's layup got SCSU within 64-57 at the 4:15 mark but Savannah State held the Bulldogs to one field goal the rest of the way.

South Carolina State trailed by 14 at the half but held the Tigers to shoot 29.6 percent from the field in the second half. SSU made seven 3-pointers in the opening half but went  1 for 8 in the second period.

Riley led the Bulldogs (4-18, 0-9) with a game-high 18 points.

Savannah State, who led from start to finish, jumped out to a commanding 23-8 lead in the game.

The Bulldogs sliced their deficit to 33-23 with 4:30 on the clock but a free throw and a 3-pointer by Hassan followed by a layup from Montgomery gave SSU a 39-23 cushion with 3:08 left.

SSU led 41-27 at the half.
