Lady Tigers Fall To South Carolina State

ORANGEBURG, S.C. – The Savannah State volleyball team paid a visit to northern neighbors South Carolina State Friday evening, and fell in three sets to the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference rival.

Leading the Lady Tigers was newcomer Christian Lyle who recorded five kills. Freshman Jasmine Waite and junior Bryana Gadis each had four kills. Kaneisha Hamilton led SSU in digs with seven.

SSU jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first set behind a service ace from Hamilton and a kill from Gadis. The Lady Bulldogs responded with a kill, but Savannah State extended their lead to 4-1 with another kill from Gadis. A kill from Waite gave the Lady Tigers 5-2 lead, moments later.

A kill from Lyle gave SSU a 7-4 lead, before the Lady Bulldogs went on an 8-1 run to take a 12-8 lead, prompting an SSU timeout.

Out of the timeout, South Carolina State took advantage of several SSU errors as Dorian Corbett served six straight points to give the Lady Bulldogs an 18-9 lead. The Lady Tigers responded with three straight points, beginning with a service ace from freshman Bianca Brochu, and kills from Gadis and Lyle to cut the home teams lead to 18-12.

Three kills and two service aces helped seal up a 25-13 set win for the Lady Bulldogs. South Carolina State used the momentum gained in the waning moments of the first set to push out to a 12-0 lead in the second set.

The Lady Tigers struggled with several costly errors in the second set as South Carolina State extended their match lead to 2-0 with a 25-10 game win.
Into the third set, the Lady Tigers continued to battle as the match was tied up three times before the Lady Bulldogs took a 7-5 lead on an SSU error. Lyle responded with a kill to cut the home teams lead to one, 7-6.

South Carolina State extended their lead on a 6-1 run that gave them a 13-7 lead. SSU battled back with several key kills in the final set, but the Lady Bulldogs pushed out to a 20-14 lead. Two costly SSU errors and three Lady Bulldog kills gave the home team the 3-0 match win with a 25-15 set win.

Savannah State returns to action in their last home game Thursday, November 8 against South Carolina Upstate. First serve in Wilcox-Wiley Gym is set for 6 p.m., with senior night celebrations preceding the match.
