Spartans Rally Past Savannah State

Box Score NORFOLK, Va.- Norfolk State scored 16 unanswered points as the Spartans celebrated homecoming with a 33-21 victory over Savannah State before a crowd of 16,269 at Price Stadium.

The loss drops SSU to 1-8 overall and 0-6 in conference play while Norfolk State win their first Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference game of the season. NSU is 3-7 overall and 1-6 in the MEAC.

The Spartans took a 17-0 lead in the first quarter, scoring on their first three possessions, with Conley Smith scoring on runs of one and three yards and Everett Goldberg hitting a 34 yard field goal.

Savannah State answered in the second quarter with a trio of touchdowns.

After a fumble recovery by Taylor Thompson, Antonio Bostick threw a 25 yard scoring passing to Simon Heyward with 14:36 on the clock. Juwhan Arnold-Smith scored on a one yard run with 6:15 left in the half and Javon Moore picked off a pass and returned it 49 yards for a touchdown with 4:06 remaining. Preston McCarthy kicked all three extra points for the Tigers who took a 21-17 lead after Moore's touchdown.

As time ticked down in the second quarter, Norfolk State quarterback Nico Flores threw a Hail Mary pass that was caught by Xavier Boyce for a touchdown. Goldberg's exctra point was good and the Spartans went into the half with a 24-21 edge.

Conley scored on a two yard run midway in the third for NSU and Goldberg added a 47 yard field goal with 7:34 left in the fourth quarter to seal the Spartans win.

Savannah State could only get as far as the Spartans 21 in the second half.

Norfolk State had 447 yards of offense while SSU produced 220 yards with 111 passing and 109 on the ground.

Bostick led SSU with 111 passing yards and 46 rushing yards. Bostick was sacked eight times and threw two interceptions. Heyward had six receptions for 73 yards while Wayne Burden had 12 tackles. Moore and Terrance Slaughter both had interceptions for the Tigers.

Flores had 116 yards passing and 116 rushing for Norfolk State. Randy Maynes added 116 yards on the ground and Boyce caught six passes for 101 yards. Marcell Coke had seven tackles and George Riddick had three sacks.
