Box Score 2 CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Savannah State volleyball team traveled to Charleston, South Carolina Tuesday to play in a tri-match hosted by The Citadel. The Lady Tigers fell to The Citadel 0-3 in the opening game, and dropped the second game to Charleston Southern, 0-3.
In the opening set against The Citadel, the Lady Tigers fell behind early but tied the game twice on kills from
Bryana Gadis and walk-on
Christian Lyle. The Lady Bulldogs then jumped to a six point lead on a 4-0 run, leading 16-10.
The Citadel won the first set 25-12 on several costly SSU errors. In the second set, the Lady Tigers fared better as
Jasmine Waite gave them a 10-9 lead on a kill. A kill from
Chikia Jones, a Lady Bulldog error, and a service ace from
Keandra Lewis extended their lead to 14-11 moments later.
The Citadel tied the game up at 14, then took the lead on an SSU error, prompting some momentum that helped them win the second set 25-17 and take a 2-0 lead.
In the third set the Lady Bulldogs jumped out to a 13-9 lead midway through and held the offensive push winning the game 25-17, and with it garnered the match win.
Gadis led the Lady Tigers with eight kills and seven digs, while
Bridgette Stephens led in digs, with 11.
The Lady Tigers faced off with Charleston Southern in the second game of the tri-match series.
In the opening set, the Lady Tigers trailed early, but battled back to tie the match at four on a kill from Waite and a Lady Buccaneers error.
CSU took a 7-6 lead moments later and then extended that lead, later, to 14-9, prompting an SSU timeout. The Lady Tigers continued to battle in the set, but CSU captured the set win with a 25-17 score.
The second set played as a mirror to the first as some costly SSU errors put them behind early, 11-5. A kill and two service aces from Gadis cut the home team's lead to two points, 14-12, prompting a CSU timeout.
A 7-1 run late in the game gave the Lady Buccaneers a 25-17 game win and a 2-0 lead in the match. The Lady Tigers struggled in the third set, falling 25-9, losing the match 0-3.
Gadis led the Lady Tigers with eight kills and five digs in the match. Stephens led in digs with 12.
The Lady Tigers return home this weekend for two Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference matches. They will face off with North Carolina Central Friday night at 6 p.m. and then North Carolina A&T Sunday at 1 p.m. Both games are free to the public and will be played at Wilcox-Wiley Gymnasium.
