Box Score SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Savannah State volleyball squad fell in four sets, 1-3, to Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference rival South Carolina State, Friday night in Wilcox-Wiley Gymnasium.
Leading the Lady Tigers was returner
Keandra Lewis who recorded a double-double with 10 kills and 17 digs. Freshman
Jasmine Waite knocked down 10 kills, while
Bryana Gadis added seven kills and 10 digs.
Kaneisha Hamilton added 11 digs.
In the opening set, Savannah State trailed 1-2 early, but a kill from Waite tied it up at two. The teams went point-for-point until a kill from S.C. State tied it up at nine. SSU then took a four point lead on a 7-3 run finalized by a kill from
Chikia Jones on a set from
Asiha Williams.
The Lady Bulldogs fired back with five straight points taking a 17-16 lead that prompted a Lady Tiger timeout.
Out of the timeout, Lewis knocked down a kill to tie the game up at 17. S.C. State built some momentum on a 4-0 run that gave the visitors a 21-18 lead. Four kills and a service ace sealed up a 25-20 first set win for the Lady Bulldogs.
In the second set, SSU jumped out to a 2-1 lead on a kill from Lewis, but the Lady Bulldogs fired back taking an 11-9 lead on some costly SSU errors.
Out of a timeout, Williams tied the set up at 11 with a service ace. Moments later, Waite tied the set up at 12 on a kill with a set from Williams. The kill sparked some momentum for the Lady Tigers as they extended a 14-12 lead on the Lady Bulldogs.
S.C. State tied the match again at 14 moments later, but SSU regained the lead on kills from Gadis and Lewis.
Tied at 18, the visitors took a two point lead, 22-20, on a 4-2 run, prompting an SSU timeout. Out of the time out, the Lady Tigers took advantage of a costly S.C. State error and then tied the match up on a kill from Waite.
Gadis knocked down a service ace to give the Lady Tigers a 23-22 lead. An attack error gave SSU the set point. Gadis sealed up the 25-22 game win with a service ace.
Tied at 1-1 into the third set, the Lady Tigers extended a four point lead on a 6-0 run for a 10-6 lead. SSU then jumped out to a 12-7 lead on kills from Gadis and
Ashlee Butler. Three straight kills from the Lady Bulldogs shifted the momentum as the visitors fought back to tie the game at 16.
Two service aces gave S.C. State an 18-16 lead. SSU battled back to tie the game at 20 on kill's from Lewis and Jones, prompting a S.C. State timeout.
Out of the timeout, the Lady Bulldogs held SSU to only one more point as they sealed up the 25-21 game win on a 5-1 run.
In the fourth set, the Lady Tigers fell behind 0-3 early, and struggled to gain offensive momentum. S.C. State jumped out to 12-5 lead midway through behind several key kills and some costly SSU errors.
The Lady Tigers continued to battle, but fell short as the Lady Bulldogs sealed up the match win on a 25-18 set win.
Savannah State falls to 0-20 on the season and 0-3 in the MEAC. They continue the season Saturday with a visit to Stetson University for a non-conference matchup. First serve is set for 4 p.m.
