CHARLESTON, S.C. – After a five game home stand, the Savannah State volleyball squad traveled to Charleston, South Carolina Tuesday for a non-conference matchup with Charleston Southern. The Lady Tigers fell in three sets to the Lady Buccaneers.
Freshman
Christian Lyle led the Lady Tigers with three kills.
Bryana Gadis led in digs with five. SSU managed only three points in the first set as the Lady Buccaneers took a 1-0 match lead on a 25-3 set win.
In the second set, SSU freshman
Justice Dilworth knocked down a kill to give the Lady Tigers a 1-0 lead. The Lady Buccaneers jumped out to a 5-2 lead behind two service aces and several SSU errors.
Charleston Southern extended their lead to 15-8 midway through the set behind a 6-2 run, prompting an SSU timeout. The home team took a 16-8 lead out of the timeout, but SSU answered with a kill from freshman
Bianca Brochu.
The Lady Buccaneers took a 2-0 match lead after a second 6-2 run garnered them a 25-12 set win. The Lady Tigers fared better in the third set as senior
Ashlee Butler started the set off with a service ace, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead.
Charleston Southern took a 2-1 lead on the next two serves. Later, SSU knotted up the game at three on a kill from
Bridgette Stephens.
Chikia Jones then tied the set up at four with a kill, and moments later Lyle tied it up at six with a kill.
SSU's
Nabori Perez gave her team a 7-6 lead on a kill. A Charleston Southern error gave the Lady Tigers an 8-6 lead. A 10-0 run from the Lady Buccaneers elevated the home team to a 16-8 lead they would not relinquish.
The Lady Tigers continued to battle, but fell short as Charleston Southern solidified a 3-0 match win with a 25-14 set win.
Savannah State returns to action Wednesday night, as they host The Citadel in Wilcox-Wiley Gymnasium. First serve is set for 6 p.m.
