SSU Drops Conference Match To Florida A&M

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Savannah State volleyball team fell in three sets to Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference foe Florida A&M, Sunday afternoon in Wilcox-Wiley Gymnasium.

Leading the Lady Tigers in kills was junior Bryana Gadis and freshman Christian Lyle, who each recorded four. Libero Bridgette Stephens led the team in digs with seven, followed by senior Nabori Perez with six.

The Lady Rattlers jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the opening set. The Lady Tigers struggled with several costly errors as the visitors from Florida quickly extended their lead to 13-5. Two service aces for the Lady Rattlers pushed their lead to 15-5 out of a timeout.

Florida A&M, with the momentum, ended the first set with a 25-8 win, taking a 1-0 lead in the match. Into the second set, Stephens knotted the match up at one with a kill. The visitors took a 3-1 lead moments later.

Lyle, cut the Lady Rattlers lead to 3-4 on a kill with the set coming from Ashlee Butler. A 6-0 run from Florida A&M gave the visitors an 11-3 lead, prompting an SSU timeout.

Perez knocked down a kill out of the timeout, but the Lady Rattlers responded with three straight kills, taking a 14-4 lead.

Trailing 8-20, the Lady Tigers continued to battle as Lyle recorded a kill. The late push fell short as the Lady Rattlers sealed up a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-10 set win.

Lyle knocked down a kill in the opening of the third set to give the Lady Tigers a 2-1 lead. Florida A&M knotted up the match and took a 4-2 lead on two kills and an SSU error.

Florida A&M extended their lead to 15-8 midway through the set, prompting an SSU timeout. A 5-1 run for the Lady Rattlers, out of the timeout, gave the visitors an 18-8 lead. Gadis responded with a kill, making it 18-9.

The Lady Rattlers pushed out to a 23-11 lead, moments later. A service ace and kill sealed up the match win for Florida A&M with a 25-11 set win.
The Lady Tigers fall to 0-28, and 0-7 in the MEAC, while the Lady Rattlers improved to 9-9 overall and 7-0 in the conference.

Savannah State returns to action Tuesday night with a trip to Charleston South Carolina, for a 6 p.m. match with Charleston Southern. The Lady Tigers return home Wednesday, October 31, with a match against The Citadel. First serve is set for 6 p.m.
