Hampton Outlasts SSU in Homecoming Game

Box Score HAMPTON, Va.- Hampton held off a late Savannah State rally and escaped with a 21-13 victory over the Tigers in a game played at Armstrong Stadium.

Trailing 21-13, Savannah State (1-7, 0-5) took the ball and drove to the Pirates five yard line but quarterback Antonio Bostick was sacked on a fourth and goal to end the scoring threat.

Hampton took over and ran out the clock to secure their second victory of the season.

Neither team scored on their opening possessions as SSU missed a field goal attempt and Hampton had a pass intercepted.

The interception, which was picked off by SSU's Javon Moore and returned 20 yards to the Tigers 28 by Simon Heyward set up the first score of the contest.

It took the Tigers eight plays to go 61 yards as Preston McCarthy kicked a 28 yard field goal with 9:27 left in the first quarter. The key plays on the drive were a 36 yard reception by Heyward and a 23 yard run by Bostick.

A 20 yard punt by SSU early in the second quarter gave HU good field position but Vaughn Cornelia intercepted a pass at the Tigers 10 to stop the threat.

The Tigers blocked a Hampton punt midway in the second quarter but SSU gave the ball right back to the Pirates when Bostick had his pass intercepted.

That led to the Pirated first score of the game, a 12 yard touchdown run by Antonio McCloude with 4:08 on the clock for a 7-3 lead.

After stopping Savannah State on their next possession, HU went ahead 14-3 when Jeremi Schwartz scored on a 61 yard run with 1:21 remaining in the half.

Early in the third quarter SSU fumbled the ball at their own one and it was recovered by Hampton.

Schwartz scored on a one yard one to put the Pirates up 21-3.

SSU drove 73 yards in seven plays on their next drive and it ended with J Smith-Arnold scoring on a one yard run with 1:03 on the clock to make the score 21-10. A 22 yard catch by Kris Drummond and a 38 yard reception by Roosevelt Isom were key plays on the drive.

The Tigers had little luck moving the ball on their first drive of the fourth quarter but Hampton fumbled a Jacob Thomas punt and it was recovered by Jauane Thomas at the Hampton 18. That set up a 29 yard field goal by McCarthy to pull SSU within 21-13 with 9:25 left.

After stopping Hampton (2-5, 2-3), SSU took over and drove to the Pirates five yard line.

Faced with a fourth and goal from the five, Bostick was sacked for a eight yard loss and Hampton took over and ran put the clock.

Bostick led SSU by passing for 251 yards and 52 yards rushing. He was also sacked five times and threw one interception. Dylan Cook caught six passes for 85 yards while Wayne Burden had 11 tackles.

The SSU defense held Hampton to just 39 yards via the air and picked off three passes.

The Pirates were able to run the ball and were led by Schwartz who gained 188 yards and two touchdowns. Delbert Tyler had 11 tackles for the defense.
