Lady Tigers Fall to Alabama State

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Savannah State volleyball squad fell in three sets (12-25, 17-25, 11-25) to Alabama State Sunday afternoon in Wilcox-Wiley Gymnasium.

Leading the Lady Tigers were Chikia Jones and Christian Lyle who recorded four kills apiece. Ashlee Butler led in digs with seven, while Asiha Williams tacked on five.

A kill from Jones in the opening set tied the match up at one. The visitors took a quick 3-1 lead, but the Lady Tigers battled back. Back-to-back service aces from Bryana Gadis gave SSU a 6-5 lead. A service error tied the match, but Jones gave SSU the lead again with a kill on a set from Williams, prompting an Alabama State timeout.

Out of the timeout the Lady Hornets jumped out a 10-7 lead on a 4-0 run.  Alabama State took a seven point lead, 17-10, moments later on back-to-back kills, prompting an SSU timeout.

The Lady Hornets raced to a 25-12 set win behind six points coming off serves from Erika Thompson.

Several errors from both teams knotted up the second set at four. Two kills and an SSU error gave the visitors a 7-5 lead. The Lady Hornets extended their lead with a 4-0 run to 13-8. Butler helped the Lady Tigers stay in the match with a service ace that cut the visitors lead to three points, 13-10.

Later, an SSU error gave the Lady Hornets an 18-14 lead. Out of a timeout, the visitors extended that lead to 20-15 on a kill from Rachel Smith.

Alabama State sealed up the second set win on a 5-2 run, taking a 2-0 lead in the match. In the third set the Lady Hornets used their momentum to take a 3-1 lead early.

The Lady Tigers struggled to take advantage of a couple Alabama State errors as the visitors jumped out to an 8-2 on a 4-0 run. A kill from Lyle cut the visitors lead to five points, and a Lady Hornet error made it 8-4.

Another kill from Lyle and a service ace from Butler cut Alabama State's lead to three, 6-9. A 7-1 run from the visitors extended their lead to 16-8, prompting an SSU timeout.

Out of the timeout, Alabama State pushed their lead to 10 points, 21-11. Three Alabama State kills and an SSU error ended the match as the visitors won the third set 11-25.

Savannah State falls to 0-26, while Alabama State improves to 5-22. The Lady Tigers return to action Friday night in Wilcox-Wiley against Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference foe Bethune-Cookman. First serve is set for 6 p.m.
