Box Score SAVANNAH, Ga. – In a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference matchup, the Savannah State volleyball squad fell, 0-3 to North Carolina Central Friday night, in Wilcox-Wiley Gymnasium in Savannah, Georgia.
Keandra Lewis,
Bianca Brochu and
Bryana Gadis led the Lady Tigers in the loss with three kills apiece, while
Ashlee Butler, Gadis and
Kaneisha Hamilton each had four digs.
In the opening set, the Lady Eagles jumped out to a 12-5 lead behind some costly SSU errors. Out of a timeout, the Lady Tigers fought back with a kill from Lewis, but 10 straight points on serves from N.C. Central's Christine Anthony gave the visitors a 22-7 lead. Two kills and a bad set from SSU sealed up a first set win for the Lady Eagles, 7-25.
Savannah State struggled in the second set as N.C. Central pushed out to a quick 10-1 lead behind eight straight points on serves from Alice Genna. The Lady Tigers managed only five points in the second set, falling 5-25.
Down 0-2 into the third set, the Lady Tigers continued to battle, taking a 3-2 lead on a service ace from Gadis. Brochu gave SSU a 4-3 advantage on a kill with the set coming from Butler. The Lady Eagles responded with a 6-0 run, taking a 9-4 lead.
Out of a timeout, two Lady Eagle errors cut the visitors lead to three points, 9-6. But, a 6-1 run from N.C. Central extended their lead to 15-7 moments later.
Later, the visitors put up two quick points to take a 23-11 lead. SSU's
Asiha Williams added a point with a service ace, but the visitors garnered the match win with a kill and an SSU error, winning the set 25-13.
The Lady Tigers continue a home stretch this weekend with a conference match against North Carolina A&T, Sunday at 1 p.m. in Wilcox-Wiley. The Lady Tigers are 0-24 overall, and 0-4 in the MEAC.
