SSU Loses To Appalachian State

BOONE, N.C.- Antonio Bostick came off the bench to lead Savannah State to their only touchdown of the game as the Tigers fell to third-ranked Appalachian State 41-6 at Kidd Brewer Stadium before a crowd of 24,917.

Bostick entered the game early in the second quarter, after starter AJ DeFilippis went out with a head injury.

Trailing 34-0, Bostick engineered a 7-play, 52-yard drive that ended with Bostick scoring on a 10-yard run with 10:51 left in the third quarter. The extra point attempt was blocked.

The key play on the drive was a 24-yard catch by tight end Kris Drummond that gave the Tigers a first down at the ASU ten yard line.

The Mountaineers scored the final touchdown of the evening with 2:11 left in then game when Jamal Jackson scored on a 16-yard run. Sam Martin kicked the extra point for a 41-6 advantage.

ASU took a 7-0 lead with 12:20 left in the opening quarter when Travaris Cadet scored on a two-yard run and went ahead 10-0 when Martin kicked a 41-yard field goal with 3:15 left in the quarter.

In the second quarter,the Mountaineers added three more scores as DeAndre Presley threw a 48-yard touchdown pass to Brian Quick with 8:10 left, Presley scored on a two-yard run with 1:49 on the clock and Martin hit a 51-yard field goal as time expired for a 27-0 halftime lead.

SSU (0-3) came out in the third quarter and drove to the Mountaineers 26 only to have Derek Williams miss a 42-yard field goal attempt. Two key p[lays on that drive was a 33-yard pass play from Bostick to Brian Lackey and a 27-yard pass play from Williams to Byron Legget.

With 5:53 left in the third, ASU went ahead 34-0 when Steve Miller scored on a three-yard run.

Despite the score, SSU had more passing yards (244 to 186) and had more possession time (32:00 to 28:00).

The Appalachian State defense held the Tigers to 41 yards rushing and had six sacks.

Bostick threw for 136 yards but was sacked three times. DeFilippis, passed for 81 yards and was also sacked three times. Bostick ran for 37 yards and a touchdown while Dylan Cook caught seven passes for 47 yards. Lackey and Drummond each had four catches with Lackey gaining 62 yards and Drummond getting 51 yards. Vaughn Cornelia led the SSU defense with a game-high 11 tackles.

Presley passed for 186 yards and a touchdown for ASU (2-1), Miller ran for 60 yards and a score and Quick caught five passes for 81 yards and a touchdown. Troy Sanders, Rodger Walker and Jeremy Kimbrough each had six tackles for the Mountaineers.
