SAVANNAH, Ga.- Savannah State fell to 1-8 overall and 1-5 in conference play as the Tigers lost to visiting Norfolk State 45-3 in Ted Wright Stadium, before a crowd of 4,193.
The Spartans rolled up 559 yards of offense while holding SSU to just 45 yards.
NSU quarterback Chris Walley threw for three touchdowns and ran for two more as he accounted for 343 yards with 72 on the ground and 271 via air.
Savannah State fumbled the opening kickoff and it led to NSU's first touchdown, a 31 yard pass play from Walley to Derrick Demps, with 14:18 on the clock. Ryan Estep kicked the extra point for a 7-0 lead in the first quarter.
Walley scored on a 17 yard run with 5:24 left in the quarter and then threw a two yard pass to Joseph Holbrook with 3:05 remaining for a 21-0 advantage.
Estep kicked a 19 yard field goal for the Spartans as time ran out in the second quarter for a 24-0 halftime edge.
SSU could not get their offense going in the opening period as they were held to 34 yards in the first half.
Walley scored on a 52 yard run to open the second half to expand the NSU lead to 31-0.
The Tigers were not able to cross mid-field until their first drive of the third quarter which led to a 44 yard field goal by
Derek Williams with 11:36 on the clock to slice their deficit to 31-3.
Demps caught a 45 yard touchdown pass form Walley with 3:31 left in the third quarter and Nico Flores scored on a four yard samper with 12:13 left in the fourth to close out the scoring.
Norfolk State, who improved to 8-2 overall snd 6-1 in the MEAC, had 26 first downs.
Keith Johnson ran for 85 yards and Xavier Boyce caught seven passes for 78 yards. Demps hauled in five passes for 106 yards and a two scores. Corwin Hammond led the defense with eight tackles.
