SSU Student-Athletes Honored At Athletics Awards Banquet

SAVANNAH, Ga.- The Savannah State University Athletics Department held the annual Athletics Banquet on April 28 at the Savannah Ballroom in the King Frazier Student Center on the SSU campus.

The theme of the banquet was “A Night In The City”.

Each sport picked a city and decorated their respective tables to best fit their city. During the banquet, members of the SSU Community Booster Club judged the tables and selected a winner.

The Cheerleaders won first place while the Football team captured second place. The Cheerleaders selected Miami while the Football players selected Chicago.

During the banquet, those in attendance enjoyed a slide show from highlights from the 2009-10 season.
The evening was started with greetings from Tyrone McCoy followed by the occasion by Shawannda McClain and the invocation/blessing by Madison Hedderly.

During the fall semester, 75 Savannah State student-athletes did well in the classroom: 39 made the honor roll, 32 made the dean's list while four qualified for the president's list by making all A's. Breaking down each sport, 12 football players made the honor roll, nine baseball players made the dean's list and two football players made the president's list.

Student-Athletes also were recognized for their achievements on the playing field.

Earning Most Valuable Player honors were: Shawannda McClain (volleyball); Shawannda McClain and Shannon Howard (women's tennis); Madisonb Hedderly (softball); Erika Wheatley (cheerleader); Amara Jones (sprint award, women's track); Sharonda Redfield (field event award, women's track); Amber Hughes (field event, women's track); Eric Plump (sprint award, men's track); Darrius Baker (sprint award, men's track); Tyrone McCoy (distance award, men's track); Shawn Souvenir (field event award, men's track); Vonnetta Epps (women's golf); Courtney Long (women's basketball); Patrick Hardy (men's basketball); Dexter Kelley (baseball); Jonathan Ross (baseball); Deleon Hollinger (offensive, football) and Antwan Allen (defensive, football).

Ameretta L. Gaskin (cheerleader) and Dan B. Johnson (football) were named the 2010 WW Law Scholarship Award Recipients. Presented by the SSU Booster Club, the award is named in honor of Savannah State University graduate Wesley Wallace Law, the only person to receive a Doctorate from the institution. He was a scholar, a leader, a purveyor of truth and an ambassador for Excellence.

Dr. Earl Gl. Yarbrough, SSU President and Mrs. Marilynn Suggs, interim athletics director, closed the evening with remarks.

The evening was put together by the SSU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and awards were purchased by the SSU Booster Club.
