Cajuns Hold Off SSU Women

LAFAYETTE, La.- Louisiana-Lafayette held Savannah State without a field goal the final 2:54 and went on to defeat the Lady Tigers 63-58 in Long Gym.

SSU trailed 55-52 but a layup by Ezinne Kalu at the 2:54 mark pulled the Lady Tigers within one.

The Cajuns would answer with five consecutive points to build a six point advantage but SSU would get two free throws apiece from Kalu and Alisha Nelson to slice their deficit to 60-58 with 34 seconds on the clock.

After Krystal Motley's free throw put Louisiana-Lafayette ahead by three, Jasmine Kirkland missed the game-tying 3 pointer with six seconds remaining and the Cajuns added two more points from the foul line to get the win.

Savannah State fell to 4-6 with the loss while the Cajuns improved to 6-5.

The Lady Tigers led by as many as six points in the first period and held a 29-27 halftime advantage.

The first half featured seven ties and nine lead changes.

SSU led by two with just under eight minutes remaining but a layup and jumper by Darice Fountaine extended their lead to 52-46 with 7:25 on the clock.

The Cajuns answered with a 14-2 run to go ahead 60-54 with 1:18 left.

SSU shot 60 percent from the floor in the second period and 53.3 percent for the game. The Lady Tigers also won the rebounding battle 37 to 29 but made 33 turnovers.

Fountaine had 16 points and 6 rebounds while Kalu added 14 points. Nelson had 9 rebounds and 8 points.

Mercedes Johnson led the Cajuns with 15 points and 8 rebounds.

The game had 12 ties and 12 lead changes.
