SAVANNAH, Ga.- Broderick Sellers had a career-high 16 tackles while
Xavier Lewis was in on 12 stops but it would not be enough as Savannah State lost to Norfolk State 42-8 at Memorial Stadium.
The Homecoming crowd of 4,967 saw NSU running back DeAngelo Branche run 41 times for 233 yards and three touchdowns.
Branche scored on a 1-yard run with 11:24 left in the first quarter. Ryan Estep's extra point was good and the Spartans (6-5) led 7-0.
NSU went ahead 14-0 with 6:39 left in the quarter when Chris Walley threw a 4-yard scoring pass to Reggie Garrett.
Branche scored on a 4-yard run with 3:41 left in the second quarter and took a 21-0 advantage into the half.
The Spartans increased their lead to 28-0 with 12:36 left in the third quarter as Branche scored on a 34-yard run.
Savannah State prevented the shutout when
Derek Williams kicked a 47-yard field goal with 5:07 remaining in the quarter to cap a 9-play, 54-yard drive.
Antonio Bostick's 49-yard run was the key play on the drive.
Takeem Hedgeman scored on a 4-yard run with 14:47 left in the fourth quarter and Walley threw a 76 yard pass to Garrett with 9:32 remaining to make the score 42-3.
With 7:01 left, Williams booted a 35 yard field goal for the Tigers to make the score 42-6. The field goal capped a 7-play, 38-yard drive. The key play on the drive was a 26-yard run by
Antonio Proctor.
The Tigers had a balanced offensive attack with 122-yards on the ground and 102 yards passing.
Proctor ran for 68-yards while Bostick ran for 59yards and passed for 54-yards.
Simon Heyward caught 7 passes for 37 yards.
Walley passed for 270-yards and two touchdowns for NSU while Garrett caught 8 passes for 173 yards and two touchdowns. The Spartans had 579 yards of offense.
Savannah State ends the season with a 1-10 record.
