Ezinne Kalu scored 31 points, had eight assists and three steals as Savannah State opened the 2010-11 season with a 86-42 victory over NAIA opponent Edward Waters.
The crowd of 756 saw the freshman point guard from Newark, New Jersey make 12 of 16 shots from the field and shoot 4 of 7 from 3-point range.
SSU (1-0) jumped out to a 16-3 lead with 12:29 left in the opening period
Edward Waters got within 19-9 but SSU went on a 11-3 run to go ahead by 18 with 6:04 on the clock.
SSU led 38-20 at the half.
Savannah State started the second period with a 14-0 run to go ahead by 32.
EWC closed within 27 with 12:06 left but Savannah State answered with a 22-4 surge to go ahead 78-33 with 4:16 on the clock.
SSU led by as many as 47 points late in the contest.
Darice Fountaine added 17 points and 9 rebounds while
Courtney Long had15 points, 9 rebounds and 4 steals.
Alisha Nelson contributed a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds.
EWC (0-4) was led by Sharise Clopton's 12 points.
SSU shot 51.5 percent from the floor and out-rebounded Edward Waters 48 to 23.
Edward Waters made 23 turnovers and shot 28.6 percent from the floor.
