Jackson Powers SSU Past Jacksonville State

JACKSONVILLE, Fla.- Crissa Jackson had a game-high 14 points, 6 assists and 3 steals to lead Savannah State past Jacksonville State 51-37 on the first day of action in the 2009 Hampton Inn & Suites Osprey Holiday Classic hosted by North Florida at the UNF Arena.

SSU won by 14 points despite not having a field goal the last 4:44 of the contest.

The Lady Tigers (8-4) opened the game with back-to-back 3-pointers by Mattisha Mangum and Jackson as well as a layup by Alisha Nelson to grab a 8-0 lead.

After JSU got to within four, Savannah State responded with a 7-2 spurt to go ahead 15-6 with 6:36 left in the first half.

The Gamecocks made it six-point game thanks to a Karisma Boykin free throw but SSU ended the half with a 6-1 run and led 23-12 at intermission.

JSU shot 16 percent from the floor in the first half and was 1-for-8 from 3-point range.

Savannah State started the second period with a 20-4 surge that expanded their advantage to 43-16 with 11 minutes left.

JSU (1-8) ended the game with 11 unanswered points but it would not be enough.

Courtney Long added 11 points and four assists for Savannah State while Kym Stamps scored 10 and Nelson had 11 rebounds and 8 points. Mangum also had 8 points for SSU.

Destiny Lane and Jolie Efezokhae led JSU with six points apiece.
