SAVANNAH, Ga.-
Justin Babb scored four touchdowns and ran for 167 yards to lead Savannah State to a 45-24 win over Edward Waters before a crowd of 11,643 fans at T. A. Wright Stadium.
Babb scored on runs of 23, 57 and 10 yards and caught a 52 yard touchdown pass.
The win snaps a six game losing streak by SSU as they improve to 2-6.
Edward Waters, which only had 60 yards on the ground, slips to 0-8 with the loss.
EWC took a 6-0 with 10:44 left in the first quarter as Steven Braddy caught a 20-yard pass from Brandon Turman. The extra point was blocked.
Savannah State took a 7-6 lead just 19 seconds later as
Kurvin Curry threw a 52 yard scoring pass to Babb and
Derek Williams' extra point kick was good.
Edward Waters took a 12-7 advantage with 4:08 left in the opening quarter when Rudy Wilson returned a Curry interception 55 yards for a touchdown. Once again, SSU blocked the extra point.
With 9:26 left in the second quarter, SSU used a 10 play, 47 yard drive to go ahead 14-12 as Curry scored on a 10 yard run. Williams' extra point kick was good. Curry had runs of 4, 8, 6 and 10 yards on the drive.
EWC drove to the Savannah State 19 on their next possession but was sacked and just before the half ended, SSU drove to the Edward Waters 24 but Williams missed a 24 yard field goal attempt.
Savannah State out-scored their Jacksonville, Florida based opponents 21-7-12 in the third quarter to push their advantage to 35-14 as Babb scored twice and
Daniel Heslop added a nine yard touchdown catch. EWC scored on touchdown passes for 44 and 60 yards in the third period.
Babb had a touchdown run with 12:28 left in the fourth quarter and Williams added a 22 yard field goal with 4:07 remaining in the contest to close out the scoring.
Savannah State's offense racked up 485 yards while EWC had 358.
Curry ran for 64 yards and a score while passing for 234 yards and two touchdowns. Babb caught three passes for 89 yards and a score while
Byron Leggett had five catches for 82 yards.
Antwan Allen had seven tackles to lead the defense.
Cesary Wilborn passed for 183 yards and two scores for EWC while Turman came off the bench to add 116 passing yards and a touchdown. Javari Liggins ran for 28 yards and Samuel Charles caught five passes for 95 yards and a touchdown. Denton Thompson had a game-high eight tackles and three sacks from his defensive end position.
