AUGUSTA, Ga.- Savannah State ended the 2009 volleyball season with a 3-2 win over Paine in Carter Gymnasium.
The victory gave SSU a 11-19 record, the most in the history of the program, which stated in 1987.
SSU's win was a mild upset considering Paine had won the previous two sets by scores of 3-0 and 3-1.
Paine won the first match 25-21 but SSU made it 1-1 with a 25-20 victory in the second match.
The Lady Lions went ahead 2-1 after a 25-16 win in the fourth match but Savannah State rallied to win the next two by scores of 25-22 and 17-15.
Bianca Helton had 15 kills for SSU while
Whitney Bullock had 14 and
Shatice White and Chikia Jones had 13 apiece.
Shawannda McClain had 27 of SSU's 31 assists and White had 10 digs. Jones and
Jennifer Lowe each had three blocks.
For Paine, (17-13) Janae' Kearse had 23 digs, Victoria Claytor had 24 kills and Marquita Josey had 29 assists.
Savannah State will only lose two seniors (McClain and
Danielle Richardson) and is set to return 10 players.
